New Dreamcast mp3 vmu video

Saw this on the Assembler games forum - wanted to post it here!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_jvyDU3Zco

I've watched that video a few times and something I find odd is that the vmu mp3 player plugs into the Dreamcast via a controller type lead! (not through the controller as you'd think like a normal vmu)! (So realistically it's not a vmu at all)

Also you can see the 'beat time' adaptor thing (the big round disc thing plugged into the Dreamcast pad at 10 seconds into the video!!
I honestly don't think this is fake - I'm going to try to get in touch with the uploader.
Dreamcast, it's still thinking.

Interesting video. I am also not leaning towards this being fake as well. We all know about the prototype they showed but it looked different than this.

The MP3 player is essentially a large VMU as you can see. It looks like it would connect to the DC through a controller port and you could download songs form the internet. It was never mentioned if this could connect to PC for downloading music but one would assume it would.

No specific technical information was ever released, only that it would be high capacity, connect to the DC (didn't see that one coming) and come with a pair of headphones. It was assumed that it would come in different colours but this was never confirmed or denied by Sega.

I thought it was just an empty shell but looking at it there are similarities, it just seems this one has no labeling by the buttons at all. Also note in the photos the plug that is shown in the video is also similar to the prototype but it would plug into it on the side and presumably also plug into a controller port.

This could be real but I can't be sure if it was a real video from the convention if they just made a mock-up and had a computer generated LCD screen edited in after the fact.

Yeah I'm not sure on this one.

Even if it was just a mock up empty shell I'd love to get my hands on it lol

-I've also only just noticed that in the image showing the vmu mp3 it says 'connector : TBD'

So maybe at this stage they hadn't even decided what they were going to use?

That is a possibility too. Plus the video does look like it could be from a convention but with today's computers and filters I am sure we could make a convincing video like the one posted. That still doesn't rule it out in the slightest. I mean if it was fake it would have to be pretty elaborate to pull it off.

Btw, could you please link to the Assembler thread as well too? If real it shows us more into the big "what ifs" of life.

Yeah sure:

And yeah I also think this could have been a big hit for Sega - just imagine if they'd of had a big cash investment back then - dreamcast vmu mp3s, zip drives etc - kinda sad to think of all the 'what ifs'
