Download quake 3

Hi so im facing an issue with my quake 3 arena and i think it might have to do with the fact that I'm using a downloaded copy. The problem is that when im on the online multiplayer menu, about 5 minutes in, the whole screen goes haywire where the colors change in a pink, yellow, hazy looking screen. Its so bad that i literally can't see a thing anymore and it looks like a three TV broke. As far as I know it only happened to me as im on the online multiplayer screen since that's the only menu I've been to since i download it. One more thing is that when i DO manage to enter the server number before the screen messes up. I still can't get an online connection. Perhaps the private server number changes every day? But yeah, my main issue is the screen thing and i don't know if it's a piracy thing or not. Can somebody help me with these2 issues?
