Online without DreamPi

Post by Dostuff »

Hello! I'm new here and happy to see what I thought(and told) could never happen, become a reality. I purchased my first Dreamcast at launch and still play it today. I have played PSO on independent servers on both PC and DC. I have recently downloaded jpegs for Jet Set Radio graffiti and on occasion, broke out my BBA to play Q3A. Congrats on this achievement and new community which I will be happy to support. I have a couple of questions I hope someone could answer or guide me in the correct direction. First, is it possible to connect to a server and play online games without DreamPi? I live in North America and still have access to dial-up internet. Second, and this is a long shot, has the idea ever been discussed about adding the ability to play DC games online through NullDC? Thank you again for making this possible and I hope to see you online in the upcoming weeks. Cheers!

Yes you can, but dreampi is really the easiest way and it's really not all that expensive, considering what you get in return

Real dial up will work fine. You might have issues with some things, like the Dreampi local DNS or the Gamespy packet editing software, but you can use the Dreampi DNS server in your net settings

I actually think development for NullDC is ded. But development of that has never been discussed here anyway so nobody could really answer that. In my opinion, it wouldn't be a good idea because of how easy it is to cheat, and if it was a big enough issue it could ruin it for the hardware players. Just my opinion though

You can already (supposedly) play online games with Demul's BBA emulation, but as with real hardware, you're limited to games that support the BBA. You can still play PSO and Quake with the BBA, as well as Toy Racer, but the other games still require a modem.

Real dial-up should get you to 4x4 Evo, Max Pool (as long as you downloaded the latest VMU save file) PSO (with boot loader) & Q3A. You just have to configure your Dreamcast DNS setting to the DreamPi IP. XDP is a browser that will get you online to surf the web to download the Max Pool VMU save file. Sonic Adventure 1 site may also work. I do not know if the only possible option to test would be Toy Racer and Alien Front Online (AFO).

I say "should" because I never tried it, but it should work based on how Netopia works. If you try these, please post your results here.

Good luck.

I assembled a dream Pi following the instructions in the video, got a Canakit Wi-Fi adapter, followed the video to connect to my wireless network and now connect easily with it. Brilliant! The hardware is brilliant! The software....Brilliant! Great instructions, support ect... Look for me DostuffWi-Fi. I play PSO,AFO,Q3A,Starlance,ChuChu rocket, and hope to see other games resurrected.
