Netopia r7220 and r7200-T versions have backup v.90 modems installed apparently
I wonder if it works the same way?

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Pulled up the brochure for this series. It seems that way but it says "dial backup" dont know if that means a backup connection or what but "w/Int. V.90" seems promising
http://www.topit.nl/brochures/r7200.pdf
On another brochure im attaching under tech specs, it says any model number ending in 20 has V.90 Analog :
http://www.topit.nl/brochures/r7200.pdf
R7220 SDSL Router w/Int. V.90
• Dial backup: (Optional on R7200-T) Backup to analog
or ISDN modem connected to auxiliary serial port.
Requires optional Aux Port Modem (TE6/DB25).
Netopia R7200 Series SDSL Routers costeffectively
combine powerful business-class
features and ease-of-use. Equipped with a
built-in firewall, 8 port Ethernet hub, secure
VPN* and dial backup options, the Netopia
SDSL Router family delivers all the
advanced features that a business needs
for a secure and reliable LAN-based Internet
connection.
Dial backup can be provided through either
an external analog or ISDN modem
connected to the serial port, or through an
integrated WAN module installed in the
second WAN port. Integrated dial backup is
included on the R7220 (analog V.90) and
the R7231 (ISDN). The R7200 can be
upgraded to integrated backup by installing
an optional analog V.90 (TER/20) or ISDN
(TER/31U) WAN module.
On another brochure im attaching under tech specs, it says any model number ending in 20 has V.90 Analog :
Dual WAN or back-up options

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Exciting news I hope. I picked up one of those Netgear RM356 remote access modem routers new in box on ebay and just got it yesterday.I'm messing around with it trying to see if it will work like the netopia!
Before i bought it I looked it clearly states in the manual "You can configure the router to receive calls from remote dial-in users (for example, telecommuters) and remote nodes." And a lot of other settings similar to the netopia that Hinted it might work.
Since the last people trying this modem could not get in to configure it i might know why. First off there really is no reset button... But there is some kind of way to reset the default configuration but I think you NEED the serial manager cable adapter thing and you have to use their netgear firstgear software for the modem and have to access some file I'm not sure yet. There's more in the manual I have for it I will post more later when i figure it out IF It all works.
You do not need the manager cable to configure it, you can access the settings menu through telnet the same as the netopia. directly plugged into the modem if the dhcp is enabled. the default password is 1234 lol
If your DHCP is disabled or its all set to different IP settings. you obviously cant access the router directly plugged into it, you will have to plug the rm356 into your lan and access it over your network that way with the IP it is set to. now if you do not know the IP , that netgear firstgear software will detect the modem over the network and will show you the IP and let you change it right there. MOre on that later ...
so those out there can try messing with it again if i can't get it working maybe you can lol
I am not finished yet I do not know if this will work yet Keeping you up to date more on this later when I have more time to play around with it WISH ME LUCK!
Sadly this did not work so far I could not change the default gateway ip to get it on the internet
That's whats so special about the netopia modems can specify a default gateway.

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Well I can get to answer and connect and even access other devices over my lan but can't get on the internet I must just have some setting wrong somewhere I'll keep working on it again tomorrow.
6/1 still working on it _-_ ...
I really think that netopia 7220 with v90 backup is worth a try.. I might even pick one up to mess with =P just sell it again if it doesn't work.

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Quick conclusion on this Netgear RM356 I can't figure out how to change the default gateway IP or edit some static route that might work. It shows the ip but I can't change it, So for now the netgear RM356 may not work. =(
I know there's a way to manual edit files on it but not sure how to do so.
WIP
One thing that makes the Netopia's so great is the manual configuration lets you change the default gateway and everything.
Also I found another netopia 3366 dsl w v.92 backup!
Has the same IP configuration and telco options as the r2000's menu , lets you set incoming dial up and addressing settings.
And I'm still betting that r7220 w v90 backup will also work

I think those will work as well. Hopefully someone will confirm that soon.

I really hope that the r7220 works, they are so much cheaper than the r2000's

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Hey all,
So uh, long, long, loooooong time lurker. 1st time poster.
I picked up the Viking dialer and R2020, and after following the Set-Up exactly as shown here (including updating the R2020's firmware), the Dreamcast keeps saying "no host".
Noting the 3 dip switches on the bottom of the Viking, do those need to be in a specific sequence? Or one of the 4 internal thingies clipped? Mulling through this thread, it looked like most answers were figured out off site / inside PMs.
Bear in mind this is to be set-up for net-surfing, not gaming, for a side-project I am working on. Any help would be eternally grateful.

Are you dialing the proper phone number for your sim?
