how to save Gauntlet Legends?

Hi all, I purchased GL for my Dreamcast on Fri, and had time to play it last night. Ohhhhh, the nostalgia! Anyhow, i completed the beginning 2 portals in the first realm, and then went to bed. This morning, the vmu is not reading any save file from GL. Is this a checkpoint save system? Im looking forward to playing this with my wifey, but i know she wont be down if we have to start a new character everytime we play. Thanks for any insight!

*Game did not come with manual
**Vmu has saves stored on it from my other games
(Chu Chu, Crazy Taxi, Fur Fighters, MDK2, Wackey Races, Virtua Tennis)

save is in the character management section of the game options...

should be able to access it from sumners tower..

Thank you for the reply! i scoured online before posting here, and found nothing helpful. I did notice the character management menu, but didnt consider that. I will be sure to try this when i get home.
