Quake III Arena - 8 Players Online

Post by Doom27 »

The Dreamcast community never ceases to amaze me. There are loads of intelligent people working up front and behind the scenes doing such things as making new video games or bringing old ones back to life with internet gameplay.

One thing that, as far as I know is never talked about would be possibly recoding Quake 3 to allow more players in one server online. Whether or not this would be possible, is out of my realm of knowledge and would have to be left to someone with a bit more knowledge. It is, however a suggestion I leave sitting here on this forum.

I know, there may technically not be a reason to allow more players, but I think with such a tight community, no doubt we could fill a 6 or 8 person Quake III server.

This would be a less important goal for the Dreamcast community, but maybe someone will find interest and look into it.

Greetings,
Doom27.

Yo whats up Doom27??
You raise an interesting point. I guess if anybody here really wanted to play more than 4 players they would use the PC version. I thaught of setting up a pc server for those who want to play a 5 or more player server with people in this community. Just have it show on the master list. I'm sure everybody here owns a pc . I really don't think there is any interest in here to be honest.

It is something that is within the DC Q3A GD-ROM disc, not the server. PC servers do not care how many players play, so the issue is on the Dreamcast side which is why the Dreamcast will just disconnect. The truth is that you cannot "fix" this through modifying the code being that the limitation probably exists more than one location within the game code.

I have been having trouble getting the online to work,
I'm using a dreampi setup but when I try connecting I just get an error message.

Connection Failed or Connection Closed, something along those lines.
Am I missing something?

In your case, which of the five methods are you using:
BBA, DreamPi, Netopia/LAN-modem, DC-PC or dial-up?

JUST TO NOTE:
I used to get that message/issue with my BBA until I changed routers. Apparently, in my case, the Linksys WRT54G did not like Q3 which I used as a backup router being my main router died (D-Link). I now have a new router that "suddenly" allows my BBA to work.

To note, I know the internet is working on my dreamcast, at least using XDP Browser, I'm on my way to ordering PSO as well so I can test that out.

My Line Voltage Inducer is homemade by the way, if that makes any difference.
I'm using a Raspberry Pi Model 2, and the classic Dell linux compatible modem.

"ALERT

Server Failure
Connection Closed

press any key"

is the more specific error message I'm getting.

When I try logging in, I have to fill out the username/password screen
and I've been filling out the DNS and Phone with 46.101.91.123 and 111-1111.

Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

My secondary DNS IP address is 8.8.8.8. This works. To note, my primary is 46.101.91.123.
