[ Preference ] Non-HD Gaming: Good CRT vs. Good LCD?

Post by alvin777 »

Hi. Just curious. On non-HD games (up to 480p only)/retro gaming, excluding the light gun as a reason, which look and feel do you preference (all things equal with boxes like scalers and the like, composite or component cables):

1) on a good sharp CRT (like a good flatscreen PC CRT monitor)
2) on a good sharp LCD

Thank you. God bless, Rev. 21:4

I play on a CRT. It just feels better suited to old games. I went to some rubbish hipster retro gaming coffee shop thing in Soho and they had megadrives hooked up to 32 inch HD tvs using Av cables and the incorrect aspect ratio, it look absolutely ghastly. I wanted to batter them all, the clueless tossers
Game over yeaaaaaaaaaah!

Assuming that both displays are running at 640x480 and not upscaled and stretched out I think that CRT looks a little bit better. The reason that I would choose LCD, plasma or LED would be that it takes up less space. I personally have both, even though my CRT pc monitor is packed in storage. If I had the space I would have it out. I do like how well 640x480 converts to 720p compared to some other consoles look on HD sets.

Personally I can't wait for OLED to drop in price.

First flatscreen technology that brings back CRT level blacks.

Plasma came close, but didn't quite cut it.

If anyone has already played games on one, how was the input lag and response time?...

I would choose a quality crt. But I don't think the old consoles look to bad on my led tv.

I use PVMs for all of my retro consoles.
One Dreamcast is by my PC Setup and connected to my main monitor for mostly playing PSO.
