Why do people keep saying that? Microsoft nicking some ideas from SEGA while working on the Dreamcast doesn't make Xbox a sequel to any SEGA console. It makes zero sense to me.

maybe because DreamCast was built on a PC, and XBOX was a PC :)

OG Xbox had so many similarities with Dreamcast and in ways was evolution of what Sega was trying to do.
Four controller ports on front of console.
Similar button scheme on controller with addition of second analog + black and white buttons.
Hard drive instead of zip drive.
You could even argue the Xbox duke controller is continuation of Saturn analog controller.
Broadband adapter --- Ethernet port.
Xbox live arcade is arguably evolution of Sega channel
11 exclusive sega titles that were meant for Dreamcast
Sequels to many third party Dreamcast games
Atomiswave ports

Xbox 360 took white Dreamcast color. (I know the systems don't look alike)
Controller white too (original Xbox remote was evolution of DC controller and 360 remote adds on to that with addition of shoulder buttons and home button)
Peter Moore running Xbox after running sega
Evolution of live arcade (Sega channel) further
Hd ports of many Saturn and Dreamcast games
Kinect is arguably the evolution of Dreamcast camera and microphone (sort of)
Sequel to hydro thunder lol XD

You could apply this "logic" to almost any console. Many Nintendo systems since the SNES had a similar button scheme too. The SNES also had a similar colour scheme. It had some 3D games too, which the Dreamcast is well known for having. We cannot escape the conclusion that the SNES is an unoffical sequel to the Dreamcast. Now we just need to figure out how Nintendo managed to do that 8 years before the Dreamcast's release.
