I think you might be right.
All I could tell you is that blowfish is an encryption..
It would be odd if visual concepts named the binary blowfish and then used that for encryption.
Typically the idea is to not reveal what method was used lol.
More than likely this is another trick.

about blowfish...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowfish_(cipher)
do I know how it is implemented?, what it looks like in hex? NOPE.
do i know if its used for the main.bin or vmu saves? NOPE.
or if you disassembled the binary, where the encryption starts? NOPE.

What did echelon do? who knows?
It would be cool to find out someday.

Have you tried loading the game without blowfish.bin?
Try removing the strings or dummy to 0bytes?
Do a file comparison of the .gdi and the echelon .cdi
See what files have been modified.
Filesize, timestamp, then do hex comparison.
MAIN.BIN is the actual game, 1st_read.bin is a red herring.

I have seen others dc games do this, it always seems to be games that use encryption. (PSO v2 for example)

I wish there was a way to open the .dat files.
It would be nice to redo echelon's rips of the 2k games.
They suffer from audio glitches and heavily downsampled sfd.
There are multiple weird things about the nfl2k games.

Maybe we can swap some of the files from the prototypes?
Maybe they don't have some bs stopping saves from loading?
Maybe they don't have some bs encryption with MAIN.BIN?
Try 0 lba data/data with the prototypes.
Maybe we can figure out something?
idk

Sega and the developers were working under the assumption the high-density part of the GD-ROM would never be accessible to the public. Bad assumption to make when the Dreamcast supported the MIL-CD format and came with a serial port and optional BBA.

nfl2k has no blowfish.bin and still throws the vmu errors.
nfl2k does not allow any swapping of stadiums, roster file, gamedata from nfl2k1,nfl2k2,ncaa
nfl2k is kinda odd how it was modified by echelon and kalisto to work.
it uses ginsu loader and uses 2 versions of 1st_read one renamed to movie.bin.
i found no differences in the nfl2k prototype version and the retail.

eventually i will check out nfl2k1.
so far its looking like the only way to mod character data will be with the game files and not a vmu save.
that is unless we somehow magically figure out why vmu saves appear corrupt even after the crc is correct.
close to getting the values mapped out for character editing.
i don't want to mess with any of it right now though.

posted a couple of topics at various nfl2k5 roster modding forums.
maybe some1 will join here and check out this thread.

Tom Brady wants to break out of that VMU save and beat my Eagles in the Super Bowl... Lol

Actually, The Patriots defeated the Rams during that season with the tuck rule fiasco. Rams knocked the Eagles out to go to the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady is an amazing qb.
He holds many nfl qb records and is still playing in the nfl going on 21 years.
I know he is no Johnny Unitas..
but, damn you can't say Brady is not super talented.

imo the rams 2000 team was epic.
Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt

As fraggle200 has said when viewing r2000.iff in ghidra that there is more to the file.
There is much more to be found for sure.
I have found a few things that I did not know before.
The NBA and NHL 2k games do roster differently from the NFL 2k series.
DCRes made a selfboot of NBA2k, and DCCM made a selfboot of NHL2k.

So far swapping stadiums has been unsuccessful (NCAA, NBA, NHL), need to test NFL 2k1, 2k though.
Bob finding a roster vmu save sounds promising.
A roster update is something that needs to be done in the future, its just a matter of who will take the lead and start a project with others to complete the mod.

Here is a link of the only post that I have ever found that describes some of NFL2k data.

http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/archi ... 79729.html

So, despite the NBA 2K series doing the rosters differently than the NFL 2K series, is there anyway to access the player character data in NBA 2K like you did for NFL 2K?

possibly?
so, if you searched the hex data of the files for nba 2k series games and you find data that looks similar to that of the character data in nfl2k series games then you might find it. (find hex data that looks similar in structure to what the nfl2k character data looks like etc)

i bet that the character data is similar for all of the 2k games on dc.
the only thing that seems to be different is roster and file formats.
but, i haven't tried to mod nba2k series games so this is all bs hypothetical theories.

nfl2k series character data is similar in structure to character data that i used to view in hex for pso. this is how i stumbled into finding the data (then after editing the data it caused the character proportions to change etc) <---so this proved what it was.
i'm not saying that this means it will be easy to find character data in other games, but it seems that the data is similar at least to me idk?

as for texture editing, outside of swapping textures... im not good at this at all.
(i.e patching files with correct header, crc or whatever it might be to make a modded texture load etc. idk) <---who knows?
unless some1 explains it or w/e then no i can't magically figure that out on my own.
idk any of these: asm, encryptions, coding.
all i can do is use a hex editor so anything else is way over my head.

i think in the past, i had spoken to you about modding 2k games for dc.
i don't remember what advice i gave you.
but basically anything can be done, its just whether or not you want to spend the time.

hope this helps?
good luck.
