I've never actually tried the VMU game for Zombie Revenge, but I happened to buy the strategy guide for it recently, since it seemed so weird that it would get one. According to it, the cheats are unlocked at random by playing Zombie Fishing and Zombie Doubt on the VMU.

Has anybody had any luck obtaining these 'Original Mode cheats' from the VMU mini games (Zombie Fishing/Zombie Doubt)? After extensive play (even maxing out the character attack/defense stats at 999) I have only manage to obtain one of them (Free Continue). This was on the Zombie Doubt game; managed a 230+ score starting on level 1. Managed high scores on both games but none of the other 3 codes were ever awarded.

It seems a 'present' VMU file is created for each cheat you are awarded.

The Cheat Menu for Zombie Revenge (VMU Files)

I managed to obtain/hack all 4 x VMU cheat files for this game.

The legitimate way to obtain these files is to create a 'VMU character' via the Training menu and then play the Zombie Doubt/Zombie Fishing VMU mini-games over a long period of time (weeks/months). If you are lucky during that time, you will receive a 'present' at the end of a game (after your score is displayed). After receiving this present and rebooting Zombie Revenge, the game will read the VMU and create a 'VMU Present File' containing the relevant cheat.

You need to keep feeding your VMU character by playing through the 'Original' mode and picking up food items. If you do not feed your character, they will eventually run out of energy completely. However that 'no energy' character can then be converted into a separate VMU file and used in the game's Fighting mode (1 on 1 character battles). If you want to keep playing the VMU mini games, you will need to raise another character.

The big problem is the length of time it takes to unlock these cheats and the random nature of being awarded a present. You also cannot access the VMU mini-games between the hours of midnight - 0800 as your character will be 'sleeping'. The developers realised not all players were happy to play these VMU mini-games over a long period of time and released these 'VMU Present' files for official download on the game's website:

http://web.archive.org/web/20031226182448/http://zombie-r.dricas.ne.jp:80/jp/download.html (VMS files not archived)
http://web.archive.org/web/20020830163723/http://zombie-r.dricas.ne.jp:80/jp/FAQ/A_VM.html (A bit more detail about the VMU character mode)

A lot of the intricacies about the VMU modes are not covered in the US instruction manual. I was not aware about the 'sleeping character' situation until I read it at the above archived website.

I obtained two of the above presents (Free Continue and Eternal life) by raising a VMU character and playing the mini-games over the last two weeks. However, for the last two presents, I did some minor 'hex edits' via the VMU Dream Explorer disc. On the Dream Explorer disc, 3 of these present files can be found (under the Blue Swirl folder), however they are for the European/PAL version. As I have the NTSC version, I compared my present files to the PAL versions and noticed they were exactly the same minus the file names. So I made the following changes.....

Examples:

* Renamed VMU filename: Zombie_E_DDD (PAL) to Zombie_U_DDD (NTSC)
* Renamed internal VMU file name: Zombie_Revenge_Present_File to Zombie Revenge Present File (basically replaced dashes with spaces).

I also used a second VMU to download a BlueSwirl 'present file' and change the last 3 digits of the filename to see this would activate the remaining cheat I could not find online:

* Renamed VMU filename: Zombie_E_DDD (PAL) to Zombie_U_AAA (NTSC)
*Renamed internal VMU file name: Zombie_Revenge_Present_File to Zombie Revenge Present File (basically replaced dashes with spaces).
* Copied altered VMU file from second VMU to main VMU

And it worked! :)

Info like this needs a sticky or be saved in a Dreamcast More info section otherwise it could of been one of those things lost to time... I have played this game a handful of times but gave up cause its kinda hard to play on single player alone...I think these cheats will get me to give this game another go.

Thanks for your kind words. Remember these VMU 'present file' cheats can only be used in Original mode (single player only). They do not work in Arcade mode.

A separate 'unlimited continue/freeplay' option exists for Arcade mode although I am not sure exactly how it is obtained. I downloaded a save/system file that already had it unlocked.

NP man this is what we need more of is hidden tips and secrets about games that can be shared with everyone. This will help alot of people, who were like me, who were scratching their heads about how to unlock stuff in the game. I know gamefaqs exists but they don't always cover what a person is looking for at times...Thanks Again .

Uncanny you mention GameFAQs as I wrote an 'end boss guide' for the arcade/coin-op version of Zombie Revenge and posted it there...nearly 23 years ago! :)
