Dreampipe has been back up for a few days. The new server has started being setup. IRC is back up at pwchat://segadreamcast.online or segadreamcast.online on Dream Passport

My last 9v died so I cannot test the Max Pool server. But I updated the save file if anyone wants to test that both Dreamcast-Talk Server and Dreampipe Pool Hall show up on the server list

I'm bumping this though about comments I made about being "targeted" by unknown people withinin the community;
As I've learned more about good server security practices this time around, I realize that a number of things could have happened besides intentional targeting. I could've been MITM attacked (man in the middle), or I could've been port scanned/breached by a bot (like the spam bots you see here occasionally). Hopefully with some changes on how I run everything for better security this will not happen again

If you put a computer into a DMZ, then packet capture traffic from that computer or device, you will see hundreds of pings from bots in a matter of minutes after exposing the computer fully to the internet. You will see VOIP pings, Telnet pings, pretty much any internet protocol will show up as pings from bots if you watch it. Sooner or later, a malicious bot will find your computer and breach it if there is a common security flaw. Just like the spam bots here, they scan port 80 of the internet and attempt to log into and post on a phpBB forum because it's the most common forum software

The BB needed a little more pizzazz

I could add a loop of Epic Sax Guy on the index page lol

Maybe not but it's still amazing

Hopefully it doesn't annoy anyone to post updates here. But I'm shifting focus away from servers that don't have any kind of masterlist. And focusing on adding more DC web features

Sonic Adventure 2 site is mostly done at http://sonic2.dreampipe.net

The redirect is broken for now due to the prior mentioned server troubles that caused me to need to migrate to a new one. But for now you can access the site from Sonic Adventure 2 by holding Start and pressing A 10 times, then pressing X+A at the bottom bar of the screen to bring up the URL bar

I've also discovered recently that you can launch the browser from the Chao Kindergarden in SA2 with the purpose of going to the now defunct Sonic Team Chao BBS
Image

I found this very interesting, so I restored/replaced the Chao BBS on Dreampipe BB
http://bb.dreampipe.net//index.php?acti ... c&forum=14

Here is the original, I think I did a great job (with help from MiniBB developers), and I think this replacement is better than the original, my opinion though http://web.archive.org/web/200712011916 ... index.html

You will also notice an icon for "Chao Laboratory" on the Chao BBS. This was Sonic Team's master resource/site for Chao stuff for all versions of Sonic Adventure, 1 & 2 on Dreamcast, and SA:DX / SA2:B. But is now defunct and no longer available. So I'm working on restoring this, it isn't finished yet, but works well on SA2's in-game Dreamkey browser. And makes for a "deeper" web experience from both Sonic games since all of the stuff is now defunct

I've also fixed VMU file downloading from Dreamkey. The whole site should work now. Possibly Dreampassport also but Planetweb still doesn't like some of the VMI files. So if you've been having issues with the files try them again and post on BB if there's still issues and what browser you used

Good work man. I was looking into figuring out how to restore the Shenmue Passport online feature (Most of them still work today)

1. The site should be super easy to recover as its archived on the internet time machine.

2. There's Internet Ranks, Special Internet Messages. I'm not sure how to go about seeing what the Dreamcast is passing to see what exactly its looking for, but I couldn't imagine it being super complicated. If I had the tools or knew where to start, I'd love to help as I am a Web Programmer. At the very least I could rebuild the classic shenmue site's html pages for you.

Sounds good, I'll begin preparing to start this in like 3 days. I want to finish Chao Laboratory before I start anything else. Hopefully the CDI of Passport works on TheISOZone

If there isn't any evidence how it worked in the code of the web page for the messages packet capturing is possible if you wanted to go that deep with it. I'm game

This looks really cool! Was dreampipe a website that was originally hosted by planetweb?

This weekend I'll have some time to work on the site, maybe even complete it since its not really that huge. If I do, do you want me just to zip the site up and email it to ya on here?

Also I'm hunting down the netlink sites too. Sadly Netlink Zone sites dont work at all with the internet time machine :(. I dug inside the bin files of the Netlink games so I have the original addresses each game was trying to call but none were archived it appears. Doesn't mean I cant make new ones that the saturn could just be redirected to :) If I were to get that stuff up and running would you be willing to host it also on the dreampipe site? I think the Saturn community would love that.

Well yes I'd be very interested in restoring some Saturn stuff. Were there any kind of features like DLC or was it just standard HTML browsing? Did any games have browsing like Dreamcast?

There's a metric crapton of webtools on the XDP disc that I want to move over to the Internet so they can be used across all browsers (while giving proper credit of course). There's even web development tools, FTP uploader, web archive browser. And there's other defunct DC browser sites on the archive with more tools, and things called "bookmarklets". Which either links to those tools or saves a mini-JavaScript that extends the features of the browser. The Saturn could benefit from a bunch of that

Make a thread on BB so this one doesn't get derailed ;)

the closest thing to dlc on the saturn was some music files, some wallpaper, saves and the only "real" dlc was the option to instead of buying new web browsers, you could download the new one on the saturn. although it did reset once you turned off the saturn

Now I'm really going to derail this thread but because it is somewhat related, I'm going to spill the beans. That DLC file was lost back in 2000 so it's not like it is going to be recovered like ever. Now the thing was a save file which went onto the internal memory which was sadly copy protected so if if the battery ever dies then the DLC was lost. Now it was more like a firmware patch for the thing and because it was an optional file it's not like we lost very much.

Now Planet Web, just like the Dreamcast had 3 versions alongside with several revisions for the Saturn and at one point there was going to be a v4.0 which never came out due to Sega at the time retracting the console off store shelves back in 1998. However it was said that the rom was dumped back then too but to be lost after the dot com crash of 2001, but that urban legend was shot down like 5 years ago when someone found the thing on a backup tape (remember when that was a standard for data storage?) and reuploaded it onto the internet right around the time of the Megaupload seizure (which didn't affect this at all unlike most other things) for everyone to use. It was a unique iso file because it is the optional downloadable save file that was pre patched onto verson 3.0 while retaining the look of the last public release on the Saturn. The internal version number is like 4035b but it was no doubt the V4 that was shelved at the time. The only thing that wasn't complete is that the updated UI was never finished. I have the rom archived onto my PC so if anyone out there can swap trick the saturn or has a modified console can give it a spin they can. I don't mind sending it to you if you really want it, but you have to PM me okay?

Now I have honestly never really seen this done with Dreamcast here in the US but I have heard that it is real and it has been done before but having a patch file sent to you via Planet Web or Sega Net could have been possible. Now Sony Computer Entertainment of America did this with the PS2 back in 2003 because that console was designed to have the firmware upgraded more akin to the Xbox. Sadly Sony didn't think it was a good idea so they quietly sent out the patch in a demo disc released in March of 2003 for april's issue of Official Playstation Magazine US (which the mailman on my end or the publishing company at the time 1UP screwed up and I never received it) and all it did was it loaded up a 3mb file onto the memory card that improved the DVD playback functionality. This is where the Free MCboot softmod project stemmed off of.

Now it begs the question why Sega didn't release the Zip Drive in the first place since the VMU was anemic as all hell being roughly the size of a PS1 memory card in terms of storage capacity, and it would have benefitted a lot if Sega ever decided to do that.
