it seems that way, is there any way around this problem? its a brand new Dell Conexant RD02-D400 (REV A06) NW147 which has been posted as the modem to get.

When i unplug and put it back in putty shows the following

Oct 29 11:37:50 dreampi kernel: [ 129.852832] usb 1-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 4
Oct 29 11:39:47 dreampi kernel: [ 246.586651] usb 1-1.2: new full-speed USB dev ice number 5 using dwc_otg
Oct 29 11:39:47 dreampi kernel: [ 246.697145] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0572, idProduct=1300
Oct 29 11:39:47 dreampi kernel: [ 246.697185] usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings : Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
Oct 29 11:39:47 dreampi kernel: [ 246.697208] usb 1-1.2: Product: USB HSF Modem
Oct 29 11:39:47 dreampi kernel: [ 246.697226] usb 1-1.2: Manufacturer: Conexant Systems, Inc.

It detects it as a USB HSF modem, which is strange for a Dell. And also
probably why it doesn't work, raspberry has bad support for HSF.

I have the exact same usb modem and it is detected as:
Product: USB Modem
Manufacturer: Conexant

Wonder if you bought a bootleg or something?

I have actually wondered that, ive been scouring site to find out where I bought it from (as I purchased the modem a long time ago) I have a feeling that it was ebay (as theres nothing on my amazon account) so im starting to think thats now the case as I think I have covered every possible avenue now. think ill bite the bullet and purchase another dell modem from the link supplied to amazon

I was thinking the same thing. I've never heard of a bootleg Dell but I guess anything's possible. The output he's getting (New USB device found, idVendor=0572, idProduct=1300) is the same as you would see with a generic USB modem.

so then it sounds very much like a bootleg? it all looks legit (but then I suppose they are supposed to)

Ive taken my modem apart (only 2 screws to take the cover)

......I'm definitely thinking this is a fake now... glued on wires? the chipset is for a HSF modem

Yup, it's definitely a fake. The inside of the Dell looks completely different.

well THANK GOD for that.... honestly I've been loosing my mind trying to figure out what Ive been doing wrong..... damn fakes!
New modem ordered.... fingers crossed this one is good.

Feel free to add description/picture to any guide to help further people out if they have similar problems, this is a very convincing fake until you open it up.
