DreamConn/VMU question

I'm trying to use the virtual VMU on my DreamConn which registers as being in slot 2. However, some games (e.g. Virtua Tennis 2, CodeBreaker) only seem to recognise save data in slot 1. Is there any way or workaround to:

• have the DreamConn's virtual VMU behave as if it's in slot 1 or
• trick games which wouldn't normally recognise anything other than slot 1 into recognising data in slot 2 instead?
