Issue playing Rez

Hey guys,

Thought I'd see what you guys make of this. I bought a copy of Rez (PAL) not too long ago, along with a boot disc for my NTSC DC. It worked great for a couple of weeks, but then one day Rez wouldn't load anymore. Other imports still work fine. So I ended up taking Rez and the boot disc to my local game store (Game Over Videogames in Austin, TX...big shout out to those guys) to see if they could help me figure out what was wrong. They popped the boot disc and game in their demo DC they had set up, and the game fired up perfectly. Ok, must be my DC then, so I told them I'd just buy a new DC. They grabbed their nicest DC for me, and just to make sure they hooked it up and loaded up Rez. Didn't work! They tried a second DC - again, didn't work. They ran the game through their disc recondition contraption, still didn't work. So they re-connected their ugly, beat up demo unit again, and it worked like a charm. I ended up leaving with that demo unit...I think they gave me a discount on it since it's pretty ugly, but obviously I don't care too much about that.

Anyway, what do you guys think about that? I'm at a pretty good loss as to why my copy of Rez seems to be so picky about what systems it will run on.

Shiner

PS - also a big shout out to my poor wife who hung out with me for almost an hour in that store!

Rez suffers from a game collector's worst fear, disc rot. Sadly all PAL and Sega Direct copies and will go through this at one point or another.

Lucky! Why does only certain regions got the promo review copy discs and everyone else got the shaft? If I knew earlier that they have a higher build quality than retail then I wonder what who Sega hired back then to manage this and what he/she was smoking to come up with that brilliant idea.

Regardless I still think it's bitrot.

Shouldn't bitrot have the same effect on ALL Dreamcast then?...

More likely a case of DC lenses starting to fail en masse after all these years I think.

That might as well be the case if it wasn't the fact that this happened.

They could have been a wall of them laying around and it would still not even read the game. There are bad presses of the game that could have happened and Rez does fit that bill. I mean he could of try another Dreamcast but he pretty much narrowed it down. now the only thing I could think of is what boot disc was being used for this?

I'm using this thing called DC-IE (stands for "Import Enabler"):

https://www.amazon.com/SEGA-Dreamcast-DCIE-Enabler/dp/B0036UHVX0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470059125&sr=8-1&keywords=dreamcast+import+enabler

But like I said, it's working great on all my other imports, including Headhunter (my only other PAL import). The guys at the game store recommended an electronics shop nearby that works on lasers and lenses for disc readers, so I may take my DC to them just to see what they think.

I remember reading -back in the day- something about the 1st pressing of REZ (PAL) being problematic for import use, however that doesn't really add up in your case seeing it did work originally on your system.

Thanks for the responses guys; definitely a tough problem to solve. If I get around to having my DC checked out by the repair shop, I l'll let you know what they say.
