Bought 4 batteries and 4 charge controllers, sadly everything should be arriving on january, so I'll have to wait a few months before I try this, which will give me some time to buy a few extra VMUs to experiment with.

I'll wait for the tutorial as I didn't understand anything from the first post except glue it with two-sided tape :D

Simply follow the steps :-)

@megavolt85 writes few but you can trust him with your eyes close.
D5 for example is the name of a component, it's writen on the board.

I know a lot of people doesn't know how to read boards, I don't know much eather, but I guess if bother megavolt once and make an easy to follow tutorial then we can bring the mod to the masses.

Whooo boy, soon to be one year old, this thread is.
I feel a little like a grave robber, but here we go:

@megavolt85, if I were to leave the micro USB connector on the charge controller (let's ignore the space concerns), would it be possible to charge the battery via USB? Or is there a risk of maybe damaging the VMU?
Also, but less importantly, is step 7 ("solder ground to the charge controller and to the battery") optional?
I don't see any ground wire on the charge controller in your pictures.

@Gocha, how's the tutorial coming along? Mind sharing it here, if it's finished?
Otherwise, I was thinking of writing one up myself, as well.

you can charge the battery via micro USB, the VMU is safe.

Oh, whoops, my bad. Of course the "negative pole" would be the ground - it just didn't connect in my head that way. Thank you for clearing that up.
