GDEMU tips:
Leave the VCDs in position right after the SEGAKARA, so that when you press the physical button on the GDEMU you will swap the disk to the VCD properly. Another important tip is to make sure that your GDEMU.ini file in the root of the card has this configuration:

Step 1
After enter in DreamKara GD, if you open lid or force reset (a+b+x+y+Start) in a certain moment, while internal dreampassport loading, you back to Dreamcast Menu with working mic

Step 3
Microphone will keep working until you not reset the system, like playing an original GD that jumps to "Sega" screen

You can open lid again and still mic on.

Step 4
If you try to boot a CD-R vcd player from step 2 or 3, all reset, black screen, dreamcast logo, sega logo, and mic goes off.

Talk with some friends about it, like Luiz Nai NeoSnk, Ian Micheal, MrnNeo, cause my point now is to boot a VCD Player, in a way that prevent reseting, in order to play my official Sega and Tectoy Karaoke VCDs, yes, released only in Brazil for a VCD hardware unit VKS 3.0/4.0 (tectoy under sega licence).

Step 5
Playing VCDs , retail or custom, in Dreamcast with funcional Karaoke and Microphones skills, volume control and etc. I will even plug an eletric guitar on it lol


The goal is start a VCD Player with Mic enabled, many ideas like 1) a Dreampassport multigame cd with both "boot vcd + dreamkara" presuming that a soft reset backs to dreampassport game list, 2) a dreamkara software edited with a link to load a vcd player, 3) a dreamshell app that enables mic and then load vcd player disk from there....

By now you already can sing with dreamcast music player, or using one dreamcast to send mic audio to a dedicated sound device and another dreamcast to play vcds, i know that's too much, but the hardware is being used.

What do you guys think?

This is just amazing!

I think a good way to make it work is take the browser that is inside the DreamKara GD, modify it and make it boot the VCD Player. With the Mic activated and booting another disc inside of it, maybe you can achieve the result you want.

That Sega and Tectoy examples of brand Video Karaoke disks are real VCD format, if is what you ask.

Sega DreamKARA GD is not playing them, but Echelon Xing Hong on my case. I used the GD just to enable the mic.

I don't know exactly, but know that DreamKara has a lot of background videos inside, but to play them may be associated with the online service at the time. Also, more than 16K musics avaliable on JP that time, maybe a "on time" MIDI and lyrics download + background videos templates.

OK, I couldn't help myself and got an image of the segakara disc!

Here's what I've found so far:

- The disc image I got support the VGA box.

- The program loads fine, but I can't use the Karaoke option from the main menu because it can't detect the add-on (which is expected, since I don't have one)...

- There are 123 background videos in .m1v format (MPEG-1, no audio, 256 x 176) on the root of the disc, providing about 4h14 of background and accounting for 602 MB of the 663 MB total content size.

- There is one .ASF file containing 401 .ADX files. I guess some of them are samples for reproducing midi files and/or other audio data, but most of them seem to be something else.

- Many other folders and files are for the Dream Passport 3.

- The SONGDATA folder contains 7 files:

- KYOKUKAN.DAT has some messages in Japanese ("thank you for buying this product", "you can already play 16000 songs and a hundred is added each month", "mind the volume to not bother the neighbors", etc.)

- Five other files with name M030000 and extensions: .A, .CMP, .STN, .TBG, .TRP. In total, they have 37.3 kB.

- SUPER.A, with 14.6 MB, is a song database. I wrote a small script to parse it, and it contains 15.751 song entries. For each song there is the title, singer, songwriter, composer, one line of the lyrics and more.

- There seems to be only one midi file in the disc: JINGURU.MID, with 90 KB, but it won't play with QuickTime or VLC, and when Windows Media Player plays it I hear only a brief chord.

So that's it, nothing exciting, really (but I had fun searching for many of the songs on YouTube)...

Still working after you soft reset or open lid on a certain moment of "dream kara internal dreampassport' loading page, then you are at menu with enabled mic. From that menu moment, are the possibilities

A way to load a vcd player on a custom dreamkara cdi , like NeoSnk said, would be some solution also, cause dreamkara look to be a dreampassport modification after all, and many multi games discs compilations are made with the browser.

I have not tested any VCD's.

I had to RIP the demo videos to fit XingHong. Maybe I can figure out how to use them later..

The browser surprisingly works with the BBA. I also translated the browser to English with Dreamarena3.

If not I have another idea with Dreamon (multi app launcher) to try.
