Metal Gear MSX Collection (CDI & SDISO)

I put this together over the course of about 3 hours. A long overdue Dreamcast release. Someone tried in the past, but didn't research enough to find out how to actually save

This SDISO is Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, translated to english using the latest translation patches. And the ability to save has been added using GAME MASTER 2 SRAM

Metal Gear has also been patched to enable GAME MASTER 2 SRAM saving, previously you could not save. A region bypass patch was also added, or the game would reset loop

These are two great game, and honestly my favorite retro 8-bit\16-bit games i've ever played. They're 2D opposed to the later Metal Gear Solid games. But Hideo Kojima's genius still shines. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is arguably one of the best games in the series (in my opinion)

Enough rambling,

READ THE README BELOW

Metal Gear: MSX Collection
by DR TEAMCAST http://dreamcast-talk.com

This SD image was tested on the latest version of Dreamshell (DS 4.0 RC4)

-------------------

Features:

-fMSX emulator
-Supports Saving via GAME MASTER 2
-Uses the latest translations for both games (I patched them myself)
-Metal Gear 1 is patched to save via GAME MASTER 2 (Could not save otherwise)
-Metal Gear 1 is patched to run on non-japan MSX (Would reset loop otherwise)

-------------------

How to play (IMPORTANT!):

-Dreamshell
-Boot mode: Select "IP.BIN"
-Loader Memory: Selecting "IP.BIN" should auto-select 0x8c000100, but
make sure this is selected anyway
-Binary OS: Select "Homebrew"

-fMSX

These settings are important, if you do not follow them
correctly, you cannot save your progress

-Game ROM 1: "GMASTER2.ROM"
-ROM 1 Type: "GAME MASTER 2"
-Game ROM 2: <Either Metal Gear 1 or Metal Gear 2>
-ROM 2 Type: "Guess"
-Disk 1: "NONE"
-Uperiod "1" (I think this is frame-skip. If you experience lag I assume you
can change this. But it may break your save!
-Press "A" to toggle vSync (Unless you like turbo)

-GAME MASTER 2

**You only have to do this once when you load GAME MASTER 2 for the first time**

Once you press "START" after inputting the above settings, you will be
brought to GAME MASTER 2

-When at GAME MASTER 2 main menu, select "SELF"
-Select "SRAM DISK UTILITY"
-Select "FORMAT"
-Press Y on keyboard (OR RIGHT TRIGGER)
-It will say "FORMAT COMPLETED" if it says "FORMAT FAILED", you
didn't select "GAME MASTER 2" as "ROM 1 Type" in fMSX menu
-Select "END"
-Select "END" again
-Now press "A" with "GAME" selected on the GAME MASTER 2 menu
-The game in "Game ROM 2" will start

-How to save Metal Gear 1

-Press "START"
-Press "Y"
-Select "GEAR1" (or another slot, doesn't matter for Metal Gear 1)
-Press "A"

(IMPORTANT) AFTER THOSE STEPS, PRESS "LEFT TRIGGER" AND PRESS "B" TO "SAVE SRAM"!!!!
(OPTION ONLY PRESENT AFTER SAVING IN-GAME)

-How to load Metal Gear 1 (Keyboard or second controller required)

-Press "START"
-Press F4 on Keyboard or "The second controller have X, Y and right trigger mapped to F2, F3 and F4
respectivelly." (quoted from fMSX readme)
-Select "GEAR1" (or slot you saved to)
-Press "A"
Note: Metal Gear 1 saves checkpoints, which are reached at elevators or
other progress advances in the game

-How to save Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

-Press "Y"
-Select "SAVE"
-Select "SRAM"
-Select "SNAKE1" (METAL GEAR 2 CAN ONLY SAVE IN SLOT 1 (SNAKE1) according
to online docs)
-Press "START"

(IMPORTANT) AFTER THOSE STEPS, PRESS "LEFT TRIGGER" AND PRESS "B" TO "SAVE SRAM"!!!!
(OPTION ONLY PRESENT AFTER SAVING IN-GAME)

-How to load Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake

-Press "Y"
-Select "LOAD"
-Select "SRAM"
-Select "SNAKE 1" (METAL GEAR 2 CAN ONLY SAVE IN SLOT 1 (SNAKE1) according
to online docs)
-Press "START"

-----------------------

Controls:

Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake require use of the F(x) keys (F3, F4, F5)
and require either a keyboard or two controllers

Accessing the F(x) keys is done by pressing "X" , "Y" , OR "Right Trigger" on the second controller

Obviously on a keyboard they're accessed with the actual keys

If you've never played a Metal Gear game, and like retro games (by reading this on this website you obviously do), give these gems a playthrough. If you like them, consider playing Metal Gear Solid via Bleemcast. This is my favorite game series of all time. And this gives you the opporitunity to play them in release order (some people like doing this)

NOTE: For Metal Gear 1, I recommend doing a video walkthrough. Because its easy to miss a few things and you have to travel a long ways backwards to get them, in the case of the "Enemy Uniform" disguise, you'd have to travel backward for 15 minutes to get it, and its hidden. Metal Gear 2 doesn't need a walkthrough except for the prison cell part, which requires morse code (Kojima at work), you can use google for this, other than that MG2 is best when you play it yourself

If someone wants to make a CDI release, please do, i just have no CDs to release a working image. Or if someone codes a LUA shortcut with a custom icon, I'll edit this post and add a V2 release

I hope everyone enjoys this, it was a bitch to figure out GAME MASTER 2, get the right patches, and fix a bug where MG2's ROM wouldn't show up 8-)
------------
edit 9/11/18

megavolt85 from assemblergames made a CDI release, and enhanced the SDISO with 0GDTEX.PVR

aside from the fact that its an SD ISO, its the only way to play the original games on a console without modding

HD collection and MGS3 re-release changed the codec images in MG2, and there was a smoking health penalty added, among other changes

This sounds great, but where's the DL link?

Also, how difficult would it be to add Snatcher with Eng patch to this?

I thought it attached the file when i tried uploading

I fixed it and attached the release to the post

edit: about snatcher, not sure, took me like 3 hours to get this working. I assume it should work, but if theres no gamemaster2 patch you cant save. only 10 games officially supported it, and snatcher wasnt one. metal gear 1 required a patch for saving to GM2 SRAM

i want to male a dreamshell desktop shortcut and icon, so maybe ill look into it then for a bonus on v2

MG1 is good, but like i said its best to play with a walkthrough

MG2 on the other hand is fucking gnarly and if you beat it you'll be blown away. its my favorite 8-bit/16-bit game by far

ill work on a CDI release if people want but i have no CDs to make sure it works. but ive done enough CDI rendering where i dont have to test

Cool, I look forward to a possible icon!

Have you tried playing this in VGA? I can't get Game Master 2 to boot in VGA
Also, any particular reason why you chose fMSX and not uMSX which is supposed to be an upgrade of fMSX?
Thanks again for making this, hope I can get it to work soon!

on my old CRT monitor, it worked fine, but when i tried on my LED monitor, it says"signal not supported".

the emulator i used was an improved version of "dreamMSX" that added save support for gm2 SRAM
