Post by Ro Magnus Larsson »

Bandai Pippin - The Apple console

In 1995 Apple released a console that was not very well known by gamer's community, is was not a success because it could not reach a half million units, but the console was interesting, it had a modem inside to connect to the nternet, the controller had a trackball in the middle like the ones released for pc at the time and the console itself had a very good looking, you could play movies too!

¿Did you know it or play it?

Bandai Pippin? Interesting. It sounds a bit familiar.
I see the name "bandai." Did bandai namco have anything to do with that?

PS: That crescent shaped controller looks very familiar. It reminds me of the so called demo controller, shown at the PS3 reveal many years ago. So that seems to be, where sony got the inspiration, for their crescent shaped demo controller. Interesting. :D

With that built in trackball, it's criminal that they didn't release Centipede for it!

The Bandai Pippin was a double down with Bandai and Apple, direct details are that Bandai, having a history of their own consoles, reached out to Apple Computers about a PowerPC-based machine that primarized itself for gaming. Pippin would actually describe the particular package of embedded software for this hardware. The Atmark that we hear of is the Japan-specific version, the international/US would be the Bandai Pippin Atworld. There's a specific third variation in the Katz Media Player 1000 for only Canada and Europe.

There's actually a very good video on the system's history from Lady Decade. Not that anyone wants to give her credit for anything.
