I just took a peek over at OC. What I've learned is:
  • Doom does not support the modem. You must use the BBA.
  • Doom does not support static IP. Your router must be able to assign your DC an IP address using DHCP.
  • Doom does not have a server. You must directly enter the IP addresses of the people you want to play with.
If you're playing on a LAN, this is relatively easy. If you want to play over the Internet, this is harder. You need to exchange your public IP with the other players ahead of time, and if you have a dynamic IP, you'll have to do this over and over each time your IP changes. Each player will also need to configure port forwarding on his router in order to receive the incoming connections from other players. Since OC doesn't specify the ports that Doom uses, you'd have to put your DC into a DMZ.

AFAIK all other online games have central servers and do not require port forwarding for direct connections, so playing Doom is a PITA in comparison to most online DC games, and since you need a BBA to do it, most people won't be able to play it at all.

ive tried many times with DHCP set on the flash settings, port forwarding to the DC, everything, about 4 times with 4 different people and everytime we couldn't get it to work. i looked amd couldnt find one post online anywhere that somebody actually played a game on DC. came to the conclusion it probably doesn't work at all

i hope im wrong though, id like to know what we were doing wrong

Years ago I somehow managed to get a Doom online session going with neoblast. Basically we just followed all the normal steps and got lucky. Also have to make sure you're both using identical wad files in your build of the game. Keep in mind neoblast is in Europe and i'm in Eastern USA. So it was shocking that we pulled off a direct connection. It was very laggy. Only ONE session worked. We tried a ton of connections and only one went through. I can imagine this would be awesome on LAN.

I always wanted to play this game but could never get it to burn or how to burn it, this seems like it would be very fun to play online

I'd be up for multiplayer, especially cross-platform multiplayer Doom.
