madcatz light gun trouble shooting

so i have the mad catz light gun and i guess it has a short in it. when i try to use it (in HotD2, haven't tried anything else) the screen will continually go to a screen saying a controller or vmu was unplugged. i can press start on the gun to make it go back to the game but it just does the same thing immediately and continually. any ideas what i should look for to fix this? all the lights on the gun stay on and seem to function. the gun doesn't look abused either.

so i opened it up and took pictures. am i screwed? looks like some kind of oxidation or something, maybe something got spilled in it before i had it.
