Xbox2Dreamcast [Mod Idea]

Post by Treamcaster »

Greeatings fellow dreamers,

I just wanted to share this idea:

"Before Mr. Okawa passed away," tweets former Microsoft exec Sam Furukawa, "he visited Gates several times, to see if it would be possible to add Dreamcast compatibility into the Xbox."

After all, at some point the Xbox was "supposed" to be the next Dreamcast...

Do you think this mod could be achievable?

Many of us do know about how they planned to make Xbox backwards compatible with Dreamcast games, but it was dropped since Microsoft didn't want a "competing" online network on the console that was essentially free...

To answer you question. Not really feasible, there are still really no handheld portable Xbox consoles to this day because it was essentially a full size PC. Ben Heck didn't even do this yet, and he would be the one to make one as small as possible... Even with a smaller PSU that was more efficient, or hell leaving it outside of the console shell entirely, not sure how you expect to fit the Xbox in the compact sleek Japanese console?

I would prefer the other way around, trying to fit a Dreamcast into an Xbox, which seems highly more possible, while also potentially retaining Xbox functionality. You can fit 2.5" HDD's inside the Xbox to save some space, I have seen it done. Anyways, this seems like a strange idea. I went in a different direction completely at one time.

I used to have an all white Xbox XCM case modded with red LED's in the controller ports, and a custom UnleashedX dashboard themed like Dreamcast 2. It even showed a faux Sega license and start up screen when you launched each game. My good friend SPPV who is a well known developer in the Xbox community hooked me up with the theme. You can see my console here form when I listed it for sale on Assembler. After all though, the Xbox was the closest thing to a Dreamcast 2 we got.

This list of games by Sega and atomiswave ports is truly why og xbox was dreamcast 2 in spirit. If the dreamcast lived on all these games would be in the library for the system. Some of the games have funky controls like gun valkyrie only using one analog stick which to me verifies it was made for dreamcast controller and then ported to xbox.

To answer your question tho...
Get a big enough table and put the two consoles next to each other. Hook them up to hdtv or monitor with hdmi switch. Go back and forth between playing them. Thats the only way we are going to make this dream come true.

I wish we were able to port dc games to xbox. Then we could use the higher memory, mod features and coinops.

I get the comparisons to the dreamcast but the OG xbox was so utterly dominated by western style games and FPS games that outside of the sega titles and a few capcom / snk games, the OG xbox's library doesn't give me the Japanese arcade or Japanese quirky game vibe that the dreamcast library has in spades. Still a fun system though.

I've seen a few "OG xbox slim" mods designed to make the xbox as small as possible. Some of these are really impressive and cut things down a lot more than I thought would be possible. Even still, I think they are too big to fit inside the DC's shell. Here's a few cool examples though:

There is someone who had this same idea but for the gamecube. Here's a video of a GC in a DC case:

What would probably be the easiest is to put a mini itx PC into a dreamcast case. People have successfully done that already. You could probably then run all dreamcast, naomi, atomiswave, saturn, 32X, sega CD etc. games on the system, as well as other sega arcade stuff like model 2 and model 3, and even emulate a good chunk of the sega games that came after the DC such as PS2, GC and some xbox releases (OG xbox emulation is kind of spotty but an existing OG xbox emulator already runs Jet Set Radio Future flawlessly). You could plug in some USB sega saturn controllers or rig up a DC controller with an adapter - or wait for the USB DC controller that retrobit has talked about releasing from time to time. Of course it's not running original hardware, but emulation is pretty good these days and it'd probably be the easiest way to accomplish what you wanted, and more.

That clear slim xbox looks great. Anthony's white xbox looked great too.

I agree the xbox does not look like a japanese console.

But I disagree on the library not having a dreamcast feel. The DC has a somewhat pc feel with all the wince games on it. Shooters like Rainbow Six games, Soldier of fortune, quake 3 unreal tournament.

On top of the Sega exclusives, Naomi and Atomiswave ports highlighted above, og xbox got sequels to other games in DC library.

Half-life was almost released for DC. Half-Life 2 and Counter-strike came out for xbox.
Soldier of Fortune sequel
Rayman Sequel
Dave Mirra BMX sequel
Soul Cailbur 2 on xbox
DOA 1, 2 and 3 on xbox
2 Evil dead sequels
Frogger sequel
Test Drive sequels
Rainbow Six sequels
2 Gauntlet sequels
Kao Kangaroo sequel
KOF Maximum Impact
Plus Plum sequel
Spider-man sequel
bunch of Tony Hawk games
Project Gotham Racing series is successor to metropolis street racer
Crazy taxi sequel
2K sports games ran all five years on xbox

Add in games from other japanese developers that you could say give a DC feel and that would be hell of a library.

Here is a video on the sega games on xbox

Not to mention, official native Mouse and Keyboard that 95% of Dreamcast FPS games have the ability to use for controls, as well as having Microsoft printed on the front of the machine. Sure, the Dreamcast is sleek, and the Xbox is a large American system, but with almost 100 games on the system utilizing the Windows CE SDK and DirectX 6, I would say it is not insignificant. Xbox will always be the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast for me, and nobody can take that away from me hehe. It was revealed by the mastermind behind the Xbox, that they were even toying around with the idea of VMU's at one point. I mean the controllers still do have memory card ports.

So yes, Microsoft took inspiration from the Dreamcast controller, and they had a close relationship with Sega already strong from the work they did together on the Dreamcast to make it easy for PC games to be ported using their Microsoft Windows CE SDK.
