tried the new .gdi release with NullDC
same strange effect on the third stage critical point, the level seems skipped in some way,
no stage result screen and level 4 starting screen (log image) displayed

then completed level 4 without issues
until it hangs completely after a bit in the last stage

Why are you using NullDC? use Redream!

old n crappy laptop here, Demul and NullDC are my only solutions lol
in reality with all these atomiswave releases, NullDC performs decently if not flawlessly on my side
with Demul instead, the sound is a bit choppy/laggy

YOu mean i should defragment my SD card with the games on? Will htis have impact on the other games too, i mean any chance to brick the sd card when i defragment it in windows?

file fragmentation decreases read speed
I also had freezes at the second level, although everything worked well through SD serial, after defragmentation GDEMU also stopped freezing at the second level and I was able to complete the whole game

I went through the game three times, with SD serial, GDEMU and lxdream, I was surprised by such a sharp transition to the fourth level, but I did not attach any importance to it

I have done a full run through with GDEMU no issues, But having never played the original I can confirm the 1 level transition seemed a little abrupt!

How was stage 3B after the rail? Were you able to fight the boss or did it abruptly go to stage 4?

Went straight to stage 4 never got to fight the boss.

But now I'm reading that its beatable is great news

damn that must be real old cause i have a I3 dual core ,4 gb ram and is running Redream pretty good..
