Hi as the title says, what's the best (homebrew) movie player in terms of video quality when playing them from IDE HDD or CF card?
I know the GD-ROM drive is quite limited when it comes to reading speed, especially in the beginning (inner part) of the disc.
But when creating a gdi/sdiso we don't have this problem.
So which player can handle the best video format in terms of video quality?
E.g. is there a player which can decode 720x576 mpeg4-avc (h264) or Xvid with mp3 audio at 24fps?

There's no way you can play H.264 on DC. The CPU is way too slow. You might be able to play H.263 and earlier, but the limited memory is also a problem.

Yes I understand that H264 is a little far fetched.
However my question was really with the existing players out there, e.g. dcdivx, DC media center and various vcd players.
Which one would offer the best playback quality, considering disc reading speed not being a problem (because I'm using IDE).

Xvid new i did would be best with no read speed is a problem
no idea if it works on dreamshell ide
NO way your doing 720 anything or even 640 anything
I'm doing direct pvr full dma and SQ fully optimized and 640x480 is possble just it was on katana but best is 4xm but is very hard to encode and use..
320x240 uses 80% to 90% cpu uses on sfd
Not just read speed sadly
