Re: Atlona VGA to HDMI Converter/Scaler_Sega Dreamcast
Whoof, uh...
Let's get some direct capture, why don't we? This is video of the Atlona AT-HD500 using a Startech USB3HDCAP. Hydro Thunder's a bit of a drab game to test, but at 1080p, this shows some pretty impressive results.
Some information about the Atlona hardware from this same person tells us how specific we need to be too.
So, the AT-HD500 is best suited for those who want to do either direct conversion to HDMI, or upscaling either or, while the AT-SC-HD500 is really only viable for upscaling but leaves that a bit more limited. Also, the AT-SC-HD500 does feature on-board RJ-45 for connecting to your network and configuring it from the internet webserver on-the-fly. Having done this same thing on my Extron DVS-304 scaler, that convenience is hugely beneficial.AT-HD500 Output Resolutions:
NATIVE /
VGA (640x480) / SVGA (600x800) / XGA (1024x768) /
SXGA (1200x1024) / UXGA (1600x1200) / 480i / 480p / 720p@60Hz / 1080i@60Hz /
1080p@60Hz / 576i /576p / 720p@50Hz / 1080i@50Hz / 1080p@50Hz /
WXGA (1280x800) / WSXGA (1680x1050) / WUXGA (1920x1200) / WXGA+ (1680x1050) / SXGA+ (1400x1050)
AT-SC-HD500 Output Resolutions:
[email protected]/24/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60Hz, 1080i@50/59.94/60, 720p@25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60
1920×1200, 1680×1050, 1600×1200, 1600×900, 1400×1050, 1366×768, 1280×1024, 1280×800,
1024×768, 800×600
More beneficial, I think, is that these converters include A/V merging. The AT-HD500 allows audio output simultaneously through the HDMI, as well as over Toslink and 3.5mm, which is really impressive. I loathe my DVS 304 being exclusively a video scaler, and only DVI output (or RGB over BNC) so I have to convert that to HDMI, but even basic converters like that feature no audio mixing. Apparently you need to have HDMI certification for that, but these A/V merging kits cost like, $80, which is infuriating. Still, my Extron's video looks fantastic imo.
There's also (maybe) the consideration of the Atlona AT-HD610. This one uses DVI instead of VGA, but converting VGA to DVI is trivial. However, reading the user manual, it sounds like the HD610 only supports outputs of 1080p60, WUXGA 1920x1200@60Hz, UXGA 1600x1200@60Hz. How firmly static that is, we can't say without someone using an HD610 and mentioning it for us.
For a lot of people, they may be comfortable just buying the Keico HDMI cable for Dreamcast, which is usually only $35. An Extron can usually be had for $50, still requires a VGA adapter for the Dreamcast, and you have to supply your own audio solution, maybe via an external stereo. Then comes the Atlona, looking to be $100. Lastly is the premium DCDigital mod, and on that note, a lot of people enjoy the plug-and-play nature of the DCDigital, but it's an expensive and risky mod. Me, myself, I think I'm willing to pull the trigger on an HD500, especially being able to streamline my setup and have way less cables.
