I’ve recently taken a second attempt at getting my Dreamcast online (via DreamPi). The first go-around, I was using some no-name USB modem (it had two ports) and gave up after a few days of no success. Fast forward five months, and now I’m trying again, but this time with a Zoom 3095 USB Modem. I read that they were compatible and thought I’d take the chance.
Of course, I’m not having success. I successfully installed the latest DreamPi image onto my Raspberry Pi 3B+. I am using a known-good Micro-SD and a properly-rated power supply from Cana-Kit (if any of this is relevant). I wired up a new line voltage inducer from my old one, and it delivers 9 V properly (connected to a boost converter wired to USB). The Pi also is connected over WiFi and I can successfully ping Google and such.
I also have all the right settings saved on the Dreamcast’s browser, but I don’t think it matters yet, as I can’t seem to even get the USB modem to function properly.
I’ve tested the modem with the Pi, a Windows PC, a Linux laptop, and every time, the power light flashes momentarily, and then it goes dark. I was able to install the correct drivers on Windows, but not entirely on the Linux laptop (some kernel issue I do not understand). On the Pi, it is recognized, but I can’t even download the necessary driver. “apt-get” doesn’t work, and when I try to follow the commands from linuxant.com, it simply states “command not found.” I’m at a loss at this point. I’m not a Linux expert either. Did I waste over thirty dollars on a dead modem? Thanks.
(The current screen on the Pi— I’ll have to upload it from another device I think)
