Why did my laser replacement attempt not work?

Hello, I have a Dreamcast that won't read discs. I tried the trick where you adjust the laser potentiometer; alas, no luck. I came across some messages saying it was possible to replace the laser device, they said you could find the piece using the part number printed on the piece, SPU3200. Sure enough, there were pieces that matched on eBay and the replacement procedure seemed manageable. I received the part and it was mechanically a perfect match, so the operation went very smooth. But there was no change in the disc reading behavior... I even fiddled with the new laser pot to see if that helped. I kind of sensed this was a long shot, since maybe the electronics are expecting a different interface. But when I think about how the new piece fits like a glove, why wouldn't the electronics and data be similarly standardized- is that notion unreasonable? Maybe the problem isn't the laser, but something else in the drive. (The disc does spin when I close the lid.) Anyway, what should I do from this point?

I came across this post, which suggests it could be the GD-ROM drive capacitors. I'm a little uncomfortable soldering surface mount stuff, but I plan to give this a try.

hi, check if there is the antistatic welding point... on other consoles there is

It would be cheaper just to buy another Dreamcast i have 12 of them not paid more then $50 each..Ones i get from japan free shipping almost never been even used with perfect gdroms..

That's a good suggestion about the anti-static point - I see something that might be one? It doesn't look like there's any components or connections on that area...

Made a nice breakthrough here... First, that solder blob was definitely an anti-static point, but the laser itself was not my problem. I learned that different Dreamcast revisions have incompatible gd-rom drives - they operate at different voltages, and it turns out my replacement laser was not compatible with my V0 console.
At this point, I replaced the original laser, and continued with the plan to re-cap the drive. It was messy, but I managed to get through it, and now the gd-rom drive works again!
