Fat PS2 slow to read discs

Hey everyone, I just bought a fat PS2 off ebay and it seems to be in working order except it takes about 20 seconds to read dvd-rom games or movies. It will go to the bios after about 10 seconds and then another 10-15 seconds go by before it finally reads the game. I troubleshooted a bit and found out that when i put a disc in, the laser comes on and goes off (so it knoss theres a disc in there), the disc spins, resets after a bit, resets again and then the laser comes on and the disc gets read. I've tried turning the white gear towards the back, I've cleaned the laser, and I've turned the black torx screw to the left of the laser. Nothing has worked. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Also the games/movies I've tested are Sonic mega collection plus, GTA 3, and Star Wars Attack of the Clones. Also also, as far as I know this is the original laser assembly.

After sometime the whole thing can go bad and you will have to replace it with a new one (laser pickup assembly etc.) I messed with my ps2 for a while until It died.. Then i threw an hdd in it.. and just played from that.. no CDVD.. lol

So my laser assembly will most likely need to be replaced in the near future. (well that would explain why I got it for so cheap)
