got mine launch day. I ordered it from Japan Video Games in 1998. The game that came with it was Godzilla Generations. Then Later in 1999, I got the US variant with Soul Caliber, Sonic Adventure and Marvel vs Capcom - Clash of the Super Heroes.
The first emulator I tried to play was an early version of Nester DC that had funky sound lol

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
Played at friends back in 1999 and loved it
Sonic Adventure
Quake III Arena
Sword of the Berserk
Resident Evil Code Veronica
Soul Caliber
Shenmue
I got my own the following year Christmas 2000 Sonic Adventure, ChuChu Rocket, Sega Bass Fishing Bundle.
Seperate VMU and Vibration Pack. (Bonus Utopia Boot CD) Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Godzilla WWF Royal Rumble Copies MKGold Copies. Boxing Day got RE Code Veronica and new year ShadowMan.
Love the Blue Swirl and Custom Cases just the Disc holders bit brittle unfortunately.
Chose Dreamcast over the PS2 Craze not to mention the PS2 I could have got would have also been Chipped and Multi-region DVD Player.
Hard to believe I used to play via RF Signal. But was one Console I was really excited to have.

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
I had been following the development of the console in magazines and I had purchased the first edition of Official Dreamcast Magazine which included a promo video of the console and many of the launch games. That got me hyped at what the new console was capable of, with most of the games looking truely next gen.
I think the first time I saw the DC in the flesh was a kiosk at a local game shop not long after it's release in the UK. They had Soul Calibur running and it looked stunning.
I received the console on Christmas day 1999 along with Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Soul Calibur and Sega Rally 2. I was a very happy chappy that day. I think I connected online a few days later, and it felt like the future had arrived.

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
I've bought a Dreamcast years after it was already discontinued, around 2004 or even 2005. There were several games I desperately wanted to play and I knew a guy who was a serious Sega fanatic. He introduced me to a lot of titles, like Shenmue or Skies of Arcadia. Since I grew up with a GameCube, I've already been a bit hooked on Sega, but not for this extent. I remember playing Sonic Adventure 2 and the chaos that insues in the first level with all the cars going everywhere.
I remember how weird the controller felt, but how smooth the console experience felt. It's hard to explain now, but the games on the DC seemed to have much cleaner picture then the competition from back in the day, even on the worst RCA cables we were using.

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
Imported Shenmue on an imported Dreamcast - even though it was all in Japanese and nobody understood anything - it was still a mind-blowing experience that I clearly remember to this day. There was nothing quite like that on a home console, up to that point. It was the stuff dreams were made of
Similar to GTA 3 - that's another one that I remember in the same way - but obviously not a Dreamcast game.

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
I got one shortly after its European launch, I remember reading about it with my friends about online connectivity and the VMU's that we could bring to school and play minigames with each other. The VMU was a little disappointing and more of a glorified Tamagotchi, but still handy to share savegames with friends in case someone had unlocked a cool car or something from a game.
The online part was mind-blowing, and it was the first console I played online with. I had played Q2 and other games in LAN with friends, but this was a better experience. I remember Sega sending out free copies of ChuChu Rocket to help spread the use of the online capabilities.
I played a ton of Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally 2, and Speed Devils. I also got Daytona USA 2001, but was disappointed considering I was comparing it to Daytona USA 1 and 2 that I played in the arcades every time I got the chance.
It's kind of sad that video games didn't evolve along the line with the vision of the VMU, because I would love to play an epic game at home like BG3 or Skyrim, and take a small part of it with me to work as a companion app where I can do small tasks to upgrade my save game and return to the game at home with a stronger character or more resources. Basically an app for grinding, a grinder app. Oh, wait...

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
I'm new to Dreamcast... heck I've been a member of this forum longer than I've been a console owner.
Finally got mine a few months back after getting it modded with the Pixel FX DCDigital HW2 kit.
Mostly playing arcade style games with it now, waiting for 8bitmods to release the VMU Pro before getting into RPGs and Shenmue.

If you don't feel like waiting, the VM2 from Dreamware is excellent and is available now(-ish), Chris from Dreamware is releasing it in batches.retro wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:47 am I'm new to Dreamcast... heck I've been a member of this forum longer than I've been a console owner.

Re: Your First Dreamcast Experience
It was March 2000 and I was out to dinner with family for my 9th birthday. We were at the local mall eating at a place called "Jack Astors". The Staff would play pranks on you and you could draw on the table cloth and the food was pretty good! Anyways, all I could think about that night at the restaurant was going to EB games after and getting a new video game. I had the PS1 and the N64 at this point, but kept seeing Dreamcast jewel cases when shopping for new PS or N64 stuff. But back to the moment, I saw it. The Sega Dreamcast for 149.99. I BEGGED Dad to get it for me, and with a little bit of luck and promising to do some extra chores, we walked out with a Dreamcast, a copy of Sonic Adventure and NFL 2k. I remember being so excited in the car ride home. As soon as we burst through the door, Dad and I stood over the box at the dining room table and unpacked it all. I remember being mesmerized by the white console and LOVED the way the controller looked and felt. We always had dogbone ps1 (non dualshock) controllers and well, we all know the n64 controller. Anyways, we popped sonic adventure into the console, listened to the grrr and whirr of the drive and bam, Sonic was on my screen. I remember the music being so HYPE. The cutscene of sonic zipping around the city, the fight with chaos, the voiced cutscenes with moving mouths all seemed like I was in the FUTURE of videogames. But nothing compared to my first run of Emerald Coast. The Whale chasing me, the highspeed action. I remember my Dad standing behind me going "oh wow!". And we had a gaming PC at the time, so we were no strangers to high res 3D graphics with Unreal and Quake. But still, this felt completely next gen.
Thank you, Dad. I still love my Dreamcast as much as I did when I first got it and I'll keep taking care of this thing until I can't anymore. He bought me lots of games and systems as a kid, but I NEVER got rid of my Dreamcast.
