VP was one of the first games I played on my Dreamcast when I got one around 2012(?). It was included in the small set of games I bought with the used unit. A little later I upgraded to a USB GDROM and a while a go I replaced the annoyingly loud fan unit with a brand new noctua fan despite not playing all that much anymore. I've seen and tried virtually every game for the DC there is and VP is still one of my favourite games on the DC. Wether the physics engine is realistic or not is debatable but at the very least all the cars have distinct characteristics and give you the impression that you're feeling the car and it's not arbitrary or ridiculous. The super-solid 60 hz framerate along with the perfect no popup level design are an adrenaline guarantee for the first rounds everytime I play. If it only had more than the dozen or so of tracks, I would likely still play it all the time.

MSR has, for sure, more variation, creativity in its gameplay and overall a great vibe to it but the visibility is distinctly harder on my eyes. In VP you can really look at the vanishing point and see where you have to go. MSR has more rough pixels and I find it really hard to see things in the distance. The graphics in MSR have some really heavy aliasing effect. I assume it's in part because they're craming too much detail into a resolution not fit for it.

It's a pity VP doesn't at least offer different day times and weather conditions like many other racing games.

I spoke to PCWZRD13 about posting the following as I didn't want to create the impression this one was coming back online. This is just an old press release from Acclaim announcing the Netspine technology that was used to power the online features of Vanishing Point. It was originally released in October 2000. I've also included a link to archive.org showing the remains of Vanishing Point's Netspine webpages/leaderboard.

Acclaim Enters Online Gaming Arena With Launch of Proprietary NetSpine* Brand Technology Internally-Developed Internet Technologies Provide Online Functionality for Acclaim Video Games Beginning with Vanishing Point

GLEN COVE, NY (October 25, 2000) - Acclaim Entertainment (NASDAQ SmallCap: AKLM), a worldwide interactive entertainment company, today announced that it has developed a set of cross-platform tools and technologies that enables gamers to interact over the Internet via next-generation video game hardware systems as well as PC's, wireless devices and interactive TV. Developed by Acclaim's Online Engineering Group, NetSpine technology will make its debut in the highly-anticipated racing game, Vanishing Point, for the Sega Dreamcast* due out this Fall.

NetSpine technology provides a versatile online development tool that will serve as the foundation for all of Acclaim's Internet-compatible products. NetSpine's advanced technology will allow gamers to compete and communicate simultaneously over the Internet regardless of the next-generation console system they are playing on. By incorporating NetSpine technology in its games, Acclaim will provide gamers with a rich pool of online features including global high score lists, head-to-head gameplay and chat.

"Acclaim is extremely pleased to announce the NetSpine brand technology. It positions Acclaim for success in the transition from offline to online gaming," said Ben Fischbach, Director of Acclaim Online. "NetSpine will allow Acclaim to create feature-rich, cross-platform online components for the video gaming consoles of today and tomorrow."

"NetSpine will give Acclaim the edge in creating high-quality online features and services within our games," said Angel Cordero, Director of Online Engineering. "NetSpine provides a comprehensive suite of tools for our developers to work with, such as universal registration, head-to-head gameplay, and leader-boards."

Vanishing Point uses NetSpine technology to allow gamers to compete on a worldwide basis for the top race scores and maintain them online. The game's Internet Mode consists of a series of challenges, all issued via the Vanishing Point game servers. When a player connects to the game servers, the game will automatically download the new challenge in addition to existing player names and top scores. All players begin at the novice rank when they log into the server for the first time, and must successfully complete challenges in order to advance. Upon race completion, gamers will be able to upload their in-game scores to the Vanishing Point server. The racer's score and race statistics will automatically be updated within the game and at www. acclaim. com.

Acclaim plans to release several games over the next fiscal year featuring NetSpine(TM) brand technology. Acclaim will make additional announcements in the near future.
