Is improving upon the DreamPi system possible?

Post by Arcticman »

Hello, I am new to this community and I do have a question about DreamPi.

Why has there not been a upgrade/replacement to the DreamPi Modem system? With how compact and easy new motherboards are able to be made, is it now possible to simply create a new motherboard that replaces the original Sega modem? One that allows DreamPi and other server code on a microSD card for online? I know the 2x25 connector is custom but can't it be replaced altogether with USB-C? Or would a custom cable that converts the custom 2x25 connector to a standard 2x25 connector work? If there are any software limitations, could emulation solve those limitations?

If this was explored could this simplify the DreamPi system down to 2-4 components that just needed to be plugged into the system?

As it stands, we are stuck with using official hardware to get online. Sega's 56K Modem is required to use the DreamPI. And the BBA itself has never been replicated, and is limited in its supported games anyways.

Honestly what I hope we can see one day is something like "ETH2GC" being made for either the Serial Port or Modem port in combination with Japanese Cake Modded BIOS. No idea if such a thing will ever be possible as I have no knowlege on the subject.

I've long thought there might be a way to shuck the connector off a modem and transplant it onto a custom mobo running a rpi pico W board or something like that where it somehow magically auto switches between modem & BBA modes as required as well as run on either an ethernet connection or wifi. I've nowhere near the knowledge or time to even attempt it, but it seems like the next logical step.
