Dreamcast recording with Hauppauge HDPVR?

I want to start recording some dreamcast footage and have a hauppauge HDPVR that I record all my PS3 stuff. etc. if people are familiar with the hauppauge HDPVR it only has a input for composite and no output for it, making it impossible to play while recording, as the preview has a delay of about 2 secs (they should of designed it with firewire instead of USB 2.0)

however I found on ebay a VGA to component which might make it possible to record some high quality stuff, but im not sure if these converters work, my question is has anyone used one of these cables with or without a HDPVR?

You can get longer ones but for what I will be doing I wont be needing meters of lead. ive got extensions if necessary

It would be nice to record some of the last matches on PSO.etc because it wont last forever but im sure it will survive for years to come yet! but yeah, need to record some of these matches!

Right I know double post but I got no replys..

since I last posted I received the converter I posted above, I tried it and it does not work, it just gives a green/purple flicker with or without the PVR relay, so I have had to find a different solution. Ive seen someone do something similar to what I have now done, which is in short terms a composite spliter cable which you can buy but I wanted to try it and see it worked before I spent more money, so I took a load of old composite cables and made my own composite spliter cable to hook up to my VGA box and output to my PVR and TV. and it worked, so I have purchased a nice one as my soldering has seen better days haha.

so now I can record some cool online matches to share with everyone , I may still try and look into recording a VGA signal as it has to be possible! and would be amazing to see.

What you could do is get a VGA->HDMI converter and connect the PVR to that? So basically, you'll have your DC outputting VGA through a VGA cable, connect that to a converter, HDMI cable coming out, you connect it to the HDMI input of the PVR so that technically, it's as if you're running HDMI input into the PVR. In regards to input lag (delay), I don't think there should be any because VGA and HDMI are digital so digital->digital shouldn't introduce any issue, any potential issues come from analogue (composite, component etc.) to digital.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the first PVR or the PVR2. I don't know what sort of inputs the PVR takes in but I know the PVR2 takes in HDMI input and component through it's own AV port in the PVR2.

dude I have the Hauppauge HD PVR and if you connect the Dreamcast to it via S-video or RCA and then use component output it does actually work for me, works pretty much perfect... did you try the rca in vs component out? Sorry if thats a stupid question but it really does work for me

Ive had alot of experience with the Hauppauge, and let me tell you it is garbage compared to the El Gato Game Capture HD. Even if you need to record composite, go with the El Gato. If you have a VGA to HDMI adapter that would be ideal. Stay away from the Happauge if you can. Here are a few examples of VGA going to HDMI recorded with my El Gato

Hey there, thanks for the advice but the issue I have is that I have soo many consoles I want to capture from and 90% of them don't have high enough resolutions to bother trying to get them to work via the El Gato.

The Hauppauge HD PVR works really well for all my other systems and it works ok with the dreamcast, the issue I have is that it doesn't seem to accept 60hz via the software it comes with and also really struggles to capture from my US Imports... so I thought it would be better to try and get the Dreamcast to connect to the Hauppauge via Component.

I guess what I need is a general solution that works for all my console options, ie: Composite/RCA, VGA, Component and S-Video

Does anyone know of a device that can convert vga to component successfully?

I do want to get the best out of my dreamcast via capture but I can't buy a device which only supports HDMI, it means I would have to find converters etc which would be a nightmare

I'm looking to do the same sort of thing with live Dreamcast online recordings while playing Toy Racer , Planet Ring etc

I have the PVR HD Gaming Edition 2, seems that using the Dreamcast RGB cable should work, gonna give it a go at the weekend and see what sort of quality it runs like.

I can tell you from first hand experience, the Hauppauge Rocket does not like Dreamcast VGA to HDMI.
Oddly enough, it will pass the HDMI signal through to the TV, but won't detect it as a recordable signal.

It could be a number of things: My VGA cable. My VGA to HDMI box. The TV has no problem displaying the 480p signal. But the Rocket can't seem to capture it no matter what the settings are.

Unfortunately my VGA to HDMI box doesn't have the option to upscale the image. So I can't even try that.
