Dreamcasts being resealed and sold as new?
First off I'd like to say hey, Im new here and just got a dreamcast for the second time in my life. Last year when I had my first dc, I was thinking of buying a sealed dc on ebay, because there were quite afew that were really cheap (around 120) they were all later models with the giant controller us print box. I searched up some youtube videos, and it seems people have bought the same ones "new" I then read a comment that stated that dreamcasts came in bags that had red cautions prints on them, whereas these ones have plain bags that are sealed with tape. Not to mention one video had the person recieving a new pal controller in the system's box o.O seemed pretty fishy. Can anyone clarify whether they were legit or not? Here's a link to one of the vids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpNYjNGv044

Re: Dreamcasts being resealed and sold as new?
Hello, and welcome. You know a preowned Dreamcast is even more cheaper and def worth looking into
Why invest in a sealed Dreamcast when you know you are going to use it?
In any event, I really like your question here simply because I've been doing A LOT of research on the topic of "New" Dreamcast consoles. I own a legit New dreamcast which was purchased back in around 2004 for only $50... what they where going for when the console received its final offical price cut here in the states" to liquidate all remaining stock among major retailers. I began looking into the topic of new dreamcasts as it crosses topics with packaging variations and redesigns, two particulars I find truly facinating.
As we all know the US console was packaged in 2 distinct forms. The first design which was of a primary white box motif and the later redesigned primary black motif with the Controller illustrated on the box as you have described. Although there were 2 distinct box designs, there was actually 3 distinctly different internal box designs that focused on keeping the unit protected and packaging materials neatly in place. The original white box had a rather simple design known as the egg shell, due to the shell being of similar material as some egg cartons. This internal package design had the entire console entirely convered and protected with exception of the top of the console and a small window on the bottom that exposes the console barcode serial. The exposed top part of the console was simply covered with a small cardboard sheet that would tuck in between the console and the outer shell via flaps.
The 2nd internal design was a rather odd design which protected the unit and kept it in place entiely using foldable cardboad sheets. I believe this 2nd design was introduced in unison to the redesigned outer box which was now primary black and dubbed the console as "The Ultimate Gaming System". I also believe this interior design was quickly scraped as this interior variation is not very common. I myself am looking for a boxed unit that contains this internal skeletal construct.
The final interior variant is the most common one among the black boxes with the controller on the cover. A hybrid method of packaging of the first two designs to protect the console and keep it place with its contents This final internal design has a small portion composed of egg carton material holding one side of the console while its other side is held by a cardboard book end that not only keeps the console centered inside its box, but also holds all the unit's cables.
Anywho, what I've noticed from certain videos, is that the 2nd internal variant has 2 major attributes that don't involve the console per se. One is the phone cable is coiled up in a perfect circle with no baggy (as oppose to the more common oval coil which has its own baggy) and finally that the plastic bag covering the DC does not have any red letters. I'm only assuming here, but I'm willing to bet that the 2nd internal variation was short lived as it did not meet standards to reliably protect the contents of the box as well as it should have. To me this particular variation smells of a means to cut down costs... this may include a plastic bag with missing "Warning" red letters. I Hope you found this post informative, cuz it was bitch wrting this post on my phone.
