Can You Play Quake 3 Online in Split Screen Mode?

I know you can play Quake 3 in split-screen mode locally and that you can play the game online, but I wonder if two people can hop on the same machine and play online? The reason why I'm interested in this matter is because being able to play a LAN game with four sets of mice and keyboards and two Dreamcasts seems a lot cheaper and more convenient than needing four PCs.

No, you can not take more than one person online with you. The only game that supported multiple people online IIRC was 4x4 Evolution, but I haven't played that in years so my memory may not serve me well.
