Preparing for online

Post by dreamtrain »

Hi guys,

So this is my first post (I'm new around here so hi all :D). I'm just about ready to get my dreamcast back online with DreamPi. Before I do though I have a few questions. First is I've ordered the Dell NW147 usb modem does this one work with DreamPi? Also when everything is set up I'd like to play PSO again but I have V1 and I lost the keys and case for it a long time ago so when I got a new Dreamcast I had to use a shared key. Do V1 and shared keys work with the Sylverant server? If it doesn't then I'll have to order a new copy or play on the Scht servers.

Thanks for all your help

Regarding the Dell modem, I bought one off ebay and it turned out to be a Winmodem (which won't work with DreamPi). The easiest way to tell is when you plug the USB modem into the Pi, you'll only ever get one of the two LEDs on the modem to illuminate. In case yours doesn't work, I used this one from Amazon and it works great:

Regarding the serials, I'm not positive, but I think you need a unique key. Someone more familiar with PSO & Sylverant will have to confirm.

Yes, that's the modem most of us use.

You can use shared keys but you just won't be able to make an account on the Sylverant website, use any of the Sylverant features like the friends list or character backup, or participate in contests/events.
PSO Characters:
Teal'c - lvl 119 HUcast - GC# 11666
Alto - lvl 39 FOnewm - GC# 12964

Shared keys do work, but I think there is a downside to it and I have no idea what it is. You might ask pcwzrd13 about it. But shared works cuz thats what I use. The dell modem works thats what I have, provided thats what they send u :)

Thank you everyone for your replies, I hope I receive the correct model of the Dell modem I guess I'll soon find out. Also thanks for the information regarding the PSO keys I can live with not having all the features that unique keys can give me. I'll update this if I have any problems getting online and I hope to play some games with you all soon :D

I'd recommend picking up PSO v2. Anyone that plays PSO on DC plays v2. The two games are of course compatible but you won't be able to join v2 rooms.

The additions to the game in v2 are well worth picking up a legit copy with a serial number and access key.

I was looking in to getting a copy of V2 but in the UK it's quite hard to find one at a decent price and no shops near me have seen a V2 copy in a long time, I'm a bit apprehensive of ordering online because I have no way to ensure I get a set of keys with the game.

I do know that the link below is a NTSC/U version of PSO v2 for ($19.00 US). It looks in tact and it appears that the seller was a user of the game as they state that the codes were used and also mentions the servers are no longer online. I understand that the PSO patcher disc will work with all versions for your Dreamcast. The PSO patcher disc is available for download via Dreamcast-Live. There is a connection guide here at DC-Talk. Hope this helps.

EU v2 copies got rare a few years back when it was the only version for awhile that could connect online until the HL patch was fixed. Just pick up a USA copy of the game, a used one is fine as long as it has the case which is where the Serial number and access key are printed.

You might get lucky with ebay for pal pso2. Check bundles of games I got a bundle of 8 games which included pso1 and 2 for £29. Pso 2 goes for £20ish on it's own.
