The game's very kanji-heavy, and there's a lot of written text, so unless you know at least the very basics (like どく = "poison" or セーブ will save the game) or have a translation guide by your side, you may have a hard time figuring out the things (the game alone's pretty straightfoward, so I doubt you're going to have any problems with progression. It's mostly "go there or talk to this guy", or simply finish a dungeon, to open a new location at the world map screen).
The game was ported to PlayStation, but it features lower-res textures, washed-out colours, even more framedrops and a pretty bad English dub (and it's also available on PSN) - there's always an option. I also remember one guy trying to rip the English text from the PS port and inject it into the original Japanese Saturn release, but he didn't go far, sadly.

It's really a damn fine piece of jRPG, shame it was never released for the Saturn in the west.

Ok thanks, I'll prolly give it a try then, the jap version is dirt cheap anyway so if it turns out to be unplayable it won't be a big loss

Definitely worth a try, I scored a complete mint copy (even with the spine card) for 9,99$.

Yeah I know, and you can still find a Prima strategy guide for 10 also...
