All the way back in 2002 someone tried to restore the online component of VOOT; http://voot.sourceforge.net
http://voot.sourceforge.net/voot-search.html

I tried it back in the day but never could get it running. Perhaps the work found at the URL above can be to any use for those skillful to play around with this :)

I remember reading Dreamcast online games worked in a different way than most other consoles, which made Xlink Kai an impossibility...

That was a few years ago though, so maybe some things changed since then...

I've just read in the swat forum that HellGate (the beta) also works with the vs link cable

If they were true LAN with bba+ethernet cable they'd already be on xlink kai. But it's system link with a proprietary cable so that seems complicated.
It's like the ps2 i-link games or the ps1 versus games, they are not on xlink kai, only the ps2 LAN games are.

But you never know, people have already made things happen that seemed impossible. The connection and gameplay would be better than on dial up restored servers dial up (which are very hard to reverse anyways).

VOOT has a superior version on 360 with online tho.

It'd be an amazing feat to program something like this. but one major speedbump might be the fact the link cable games don't expect any latency, because its a direct connection, whereas a LAN game expects SOME latency and must be able to handle it without crashing

any latency at all could cause the games to desync or crash, but that's only speculation

It would be like a Netlink game but even worse!

Serial cable also has much higher bandwidth than modem, even if it could work with no latency (impossible), you would be fighting bandwidth issues.

Depends. Could be a direct connection from Serial to DreamPi, then use broadband speeds to emulate the connection. Broadband speeds must be faster than the speeds expected of an old serial connection, surely?

Anyone know how many bits the serial connection uses on the DC? Surly it cant just be one bit
