Well, I just wanted to leave some feedback on this because exactly the same thing happened to me, with a little difference: the drive would not read GD-rom, CD-rom or even audio CD's. Nothing.
I tried cleaning the lens and adjusting the pot and although it improved a little (would only read some audio CD's), on the next day it was dead again.
I decided to follow the tutorial by @darius. At this point I had nothing to lose, really.
Grabbed my two soldering irons and a pair of magnifying glasses.
I managed to remove the smd caps without lifting any tracks or solder pads.
Cleaned it and soldered new electrolytic caps, carefully bending and trimming the legs. Didn't find the mini-type as darius used but regular 6.3x11mm. It's a tight fit but it's possible.
I was afraid I could damage the ribbon with the connectors but used some small tweezers to put it in place and pushed it in gently.
Reassembled the shielding and installed it back.
Power on and... it's working!!
All the discs I have tried, original or cd-r, audio-data or data-data, it takes everything.
Even some coasters I tried (from a pile I keep) were not coasters after all!
I treated them as failed burnings but it turns out the problem was already the DC drive failing.
I'm sooo happy.
