Yes easy to make up to 2gb image and run it on gdemu could remake retail games or have homebrew with up to 2gb of space corse you cant burn it ..

but real disks are going the way of the DoDO

I don't see how this is relevant or what it was a response to but OK, thank you for the info. I didn't know that you could use 2gb images with GDemu.

Your ? Are GDs just dual layer CDs?

No there not but there was 99min cdrs which was almost the same 870mb normal cdr that the dreamcast can read and or a normal cd drive
with some work pretty much all gdroms can be made to fit with out any loss of detail
The GD-ROM in the Dreamcast works in constant angular velocity (CAV) mode, like the majority of modern optical drives. Very old CD-ROM drives read with a constant linear velocity (CLV) design, however (usually 12× or slower). Sega achieved the higher density by decreasing the speed of the disc to half and by letting the standard CD-ROM components read at the normal rate thus nearly doubling the disc's data density. This method allowed Sega to use cheaper off-the-shelf components when building the Dreamcast.

The Naomi had the GD-ROM unit available but that system actually preloads assets into a cache on the GD-ROM unit to act as substitute ROM since the Naomi's design was still around a sort of cartridge. Given Yamaha and Sega's collaboration, they did what made sense to them, and so, GD-ROM is what Sega stuck with for those 4 arcade systems. It did also provide a decent baseline for the same security that exists on the Dreamcast, sans MIL-CD. No other systems are built with the MIL-CD spec, so it's nearly impossible to rip and bootleg those GD-ROM games without having a firmware-hacked CD drive. Combined with how arcade hardware isn't usually available to consumers, this was an effective protection.

At least it's not the CPS boards with the suicide battery (where a decryption key is stored in memory, and that memory is volatile. Battery dies, game key dies, your arcade PCB becomes a paperweight).

Ah, alright. Just thought it would be nice for clarification since all sources seemed to quote the same thing. What wikipedia says must be literally true then. Thanks. I like the glow thing too.

Ah, OK. They were just sticking with the technology they invested in then? Getting their money's worth. And the copy protection thing as well.

At least it's not as bad as the original Xbox 360's drive. That thing sounds like a jet engine.

It is weird to play games on the DC without the sound of the GD-ROM drive. Feels almost like another system.
