Gary_b is leading you down a path of distraction.

There are in fact home brew games that can be purchased and downloaded. However, it is my instinct that Home brew games are not causing your DC console to hum. Simply spray some silicone lubricant into the GD spindle bearing and try it again. If it doesn't work on the first try, lubricate it again until there is no more humming noise.

im not leading him anywhere. i am just trying to answer his questions. we already told him to try to lube it. he wants to return the console and the seller is giving him a hard time about it. not much we can do to help him with that. i would do as you said and lube it. or just leave it alone, if it reads games then who cares about the noise? all Dreamcasts make a lot of noise anyway!

My Dreamcast has made some really screeching noises but it goes away with use. There are tune-up directions out on the web to speed up the laser pickup, but consider that a last resort. You may want to take it apart and just check all the screws holding the drive down....don't worry about using cd'rs, if sega didnt want us to use them, we wouldnt have the option in the first place. (thats why they went with gdroms)

Thanks once again, especially to Gary_b for his answers. The seller eventually agreed to a return (replacement, actually) after I linked him to this topic. I also learned quite a few things. Hopefully this info will help other people, as the good, non-noisy Dreamcasts available in the world get fewer and fewer.

I would have tried lubing it but thought it better just to get a replacement. If that has problems too, well, we'll see.
