Or just change START+A+B+X+Y to START+A (easier) and have it work in all modes.

Additional MODE could be START+B.

Then scrap the current LTS setup and map LTS to D-PAD for movement.
That isn't an option as a handful of games actually used START in tandem with face buttons to supply extra controls when a 6-button pad wasn't an option... or, if they were REALLY lazy and didn't bother implementing 6-button support. The solution is to naturally just switch to 6-button for compatible games, but there are going to be exceptions where people want to see what the 3-button experience is like.

Honestly, a more valid idea would be to get rid of the duplicate B button (as the two 3B layouts have B mapped to B and X) and instead implement 3 layouts that rearrange them, and offer Y or B as the system menu button.

The only reason I can think for why that wasn't the case is simply, the last thing you want in the middle of your game session is to have the menu open, and then accidentally scroll down to Reset or Exit To Menu, losing progress if not the whole game. I don't see a better solution than to do Start+ABXY or Start+LR. I feel like it's fine the way that it is because anyone using a GDemu with "In-Game Reset" enabled should be very familiar with the Start+ABXY command.

I like the idea of adding the START+LR option to the already existing option to bring up the gen's menu. It so much easier on a controller without an analog stick.
