I don't think anyone really knows where it came from. They didn't say. Chances are it was found somewhere on an old disc or hard drive. The developer, Psygnosis, went defunct in 2012. The founders went on to form Firesprite which was bought by Sony last year.

I guess it remains to be seen if Sony will react but so far they've been silent.

There's nothing to suggest that this source is being released for free or open-sourced from the original authors. Still nice that its been recovered for preservation purposes. Guess we will have to hope that one day there is a decompilation project that would result in a legal source port.

In the mean time there is this:

I did find this while looking for info on this API it used. Not sure how easily it would be to convert to GL. The page here is informative maybe to anybody attempting porting to PC to try and get it looking like that.

Fun trivia: The 3D Rage seems to have been the inspiration for the Dreamcast's texture compression. The 3D Rage Pro had VQ compression that looks like it could be losslessly converted to the Dreamcast's VQ format (a 256 entry codebook of 2x2 pixels).

The Dreamcast has very little of this racing genre in its library. It would be a nice addition.

I never was able to play these games that well.
To be fair, the first WipEout (on PS1 anyway, I haven't played the Saturn or PC versions) is rubbish, borderline unplayable to me. 2097's much better mainly because there's no insta-stop when you graze the side walls.
