Which leads me to the typical "game won't load with your cable, please restart" prompt. Do I just need a different rip of the game? Or what else am I missing here?
I think you're a bit confused. RGB has nothing to do with VGA. These are two entirely different video output modes.
That being said, VGA is less of a hassle! In gdMenu's settings menu, simply turn on "Force VGA".
For the few games that can't be forced in VGA mode, you can easily patch most of them. You can download them at the link below, as well as read up more about VGA on Dreamcast.

...and as a mild update, I grabbed the rip listed at this page,
https://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewto ... 22&t=13313 , and wound up with the same issue of the game not loading on VGA. Notice there that it says "VGA NO" in the menu, I get that with every version I've tested.

Whew, okay, I figured it out by picking around other threads........ turns out the GDMENUCardManager doesn't include a properly updated version of OpenMenu. I found and installed @megavolt85's fork (
https://github.com/megavolt85/openmenu), and now the auto-VGA feature *is* working (it previously wasn't, hence my utter confusion through this thread).
I appreciate the insane amount of resources on this board for a GDEmu noob like myself. Thanks for the replies here.

The screenshot you shared was GDMenu, not openMenu. Both can force VGA, but you have to turn on the setting in GDMenu. Meanwhile, openmenu does it by default. Or, is that the GDMenu theme on openMenu? To be clear, GDMenu is an entirely different piece of menu software, but openMenu has a theme that resembles it (for those that prefer it).
Anyway, happy to hear you got openMenu working. I suggest you check out my video tutorial if you have any interest in artwork:

You may also want to update your cheats database, which you can download from here:
viewtopic.php?t=17078
Just copy the FCDCHEATS.BIN file to the following folder, then rebuild openMenu by clicking "Save Changes":
GDMENUCardManager.v2.0.1-win-x64\tools\openMenu\menu_data\cheats\
Lastly, if you're interested in lettered folders, check out this video and its description for more details:

Oh I switched to GDMenu so you could see the version # and other info about the ripped game, just in case that helped. Otherwise yep I know the difference between the two! And yes thanks for the additional info.

Thanks for that info. Shame it doesn't include some of the others I've run into on my fresh GDEMU install, particularly NBA on NBC Showtime (my stepkids love NBA Jam so I'm hoping to figure that one out at some point).
Actually, I took a quick look and cannot replicate broken RGB with NBA Showtime using an emulator in either North American or European console mode. I'm looking at the disassembled code where it does all of the video initialization logic, and don't see how RGB would ever fail.
Which console region are you using, and what issue specifically do you see with RGB?

Force VGA should be set ON. Menu -> Options. (Standalone GDMENU)
Edit: Oh, the original openMenu (mrneo240) never "Forced VGA" - a common complaint. The updated version (megavolt85) always does a "Forced VGA" and there is no way to turn it off.

I never knew there was a theme for openMenu that resembled GDMenu. Consider me enlightened!
