dreamcast cant read GD-ROM but CD-R backups work fine, EDIT

ok

EDIT: so i messed with it some and found a point where i can get 1 gd rom to work 2/3 times and the others maybe 1/10

prob is now it wont play cdr backups unless i put it back

what do you guys think

out of curiosity is it easier for a DC to read cdrs rather than GDs?

hard to say for sure, but i would say yes CD-rs are less dense. a GD holds around 25% more data.



your problem sucks. you might be best off buying a new laser assembly.

I looked online you can buy either the laser or the whole gd-rom package

apparently their are different lasers which are not interchangeable with the mainboard

any idea on how to go about this

either laser or complete gd rom/ which laser?

i never had a problem changing the GD-rom units in my Dreamcasts. i didnt know that some are incompatible though. idk? i guess buy the whole GD unit.

There's a way to swap the GD laser with a PC-CDROM laser. I've wrote a tutorial, but it's in spanish. Yes, it works like a charm, but i still can't test if it works with GDROMs

I've never ever seen a broken GD unit. My main one is from 2001, it's been used intensively about 4/5 years and it's still working great. But it's very common to have to recalibrate it, it's not a hard work at all and will solve 90% of the problems.
