Your terminology for the modem type is completely wrong. You're talking about a Hardware Voice/Data/Fax Modem as oppossed to a Software Voice/Data/Fax Modem. And the physical differences between the two modem types go far beyond the presence of a piezoelectric speaker, which is an inaccurate means of identification.

Hardware modems handle the entire analog-to-digital digital-to-analog data translation for the computer. They have their own line voltage inducer. So making the hardware modems easily identifiable because also of the transformer on them. Overall hardware modems have a circuit board surface area typically twice the size of a software modem.

Software modems merely provide a means of interface between the computer and the phoneline. THink of them more as an adapter than anything. The bulk of the data translation and transmission work is left up to the system CPU. Software modems have no means of line voltage induction thus relying entirely on the presence of a good phoneline connection in order to function properly. Because the software modem pretty much does nothing unto itself it's comprised of very few components allowing manufacturers to use rather small circuit boards.

But here's the thing, both hardware and software modems can posses a piezoelectric speaker!

Its voice compatible so it should work.

Like brourke228 said, nearly all modems with Conexant chip sets will work in Windows and Linux for this.

Okay, I've tried several times with the Windows XP guides. The connection just won't establish for some reason. There might be some problems with the Windows register I modified as said in the tutorial. The guy who wrote it had a different modem. If you're familiar with the Windows register modifications needed for my modem I would appreciate some help.

Well, the problem is that my stationary PC refuses to load Linux because of low physical memory regardless of Ubuntu or Xubuntu. Now I'm trying to hook up my Windows Vista PC to that same modem through an ethernet cable.

Xubuntu while it uses less memory it is still very slow. Use lubuntu or crunchbang linux. KingBuzzo used crunchbang linux and it uses fluxbox I think so it should be way less of a memory hog.

It still doesn't work. If I could have a tutorial on how to install my Aztech modem right on my laptop and make it show up in device manager so I can find out which COM port it is using I would be pleased with that. My old computer here is just way too crappy to do anything with for the moment. Can't blame it after all these years though. Bought it in 1995 or so.
