The only Dreamcasts I have killed have been through my own fault in modding. (fried a motherboard 2 days ago actually   )

Only 1 minor problem I had is the controller port thing - did the quick fix and sorted!

I'd definatley keep your Dreamcast for parts - sometimes on ebay you can get spare parts so you may get a power board sometime! (actually I have a spare if your ok with a PAL one?)

*edit*

He probably has already checked but make sure he's checked the little fuse at the back of the power board - I had a friends Dreamcast a year or so ago stop working and turned out to be the fuse. (a common thing to overlook)

I'm still using my original Dreamcast that I got for Christmas in I think it was 2000 (might have been 1999). The only problem I've had with it is that after many years of use is it started making more noise then usual. I opened it up and found that the grease on the plastic gears for the laser had dried up. I cleaned the gears and re-greased them. It has worked great ever since. I have a launch Dreamcast complete in box just in case mine ever does break for good though. 8-)

Mine had a problem with the power converter as i short circuit it.
After getting a new dc i also decided to switch the motherboard and the laser, the motherboard was causing some problems similar to a weak connection beetween the power converter an the console itself

They don't break to often, i guess it's just like any other console.
