Oh, that's a shame as they both look nice on screenshots ! So were there any good racing games(I'm not counting Crazy Taxi) on Naomi/Atomiswave ? Considering Sega's arcade racing heritage I'd find it weird that a decent racer didn't appear on either machine !!

Btw, I was just wondering...........what exactly is the difference between Naomi and Atomiswave ?

Some one in another forum opened a atomiswave. They said it looks exactly like a stock dreamcast with a different bios chip. Its also a know fact that the atomis wave has the same amount of main ram like the dreamcast, but 2 times as much video ram and I think 4 times more the sound ram.

Edit : here have a look.It seems to have intergrated vga. That would have been awesome on the dreamcast.

Neohound:

The only NAOMI 'straight' racer I'm aware of is Wave Race GP. At the time (1999-2000) Sega already had a glut of racers from its Model 2 & Model 3 hardware so demand for new racers was weak. Sega's Star Wars Racer Arcade was around in 2000 but ran on the Hikaru board due to its elaborate controls. Surprisingly that was the first racing game I really got into as it had a Internet Ranking. Here's a (bad) video of me playing with a link to an old text guide I wrote back in October 2000: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbWloumxblg

Atomiswave was really aimed at the 'Sammy' side of the business as opposed to Sega. It was created to accomodate low budget and less powerful arcade games.

Think I need to create a Sega Park arcade thread in the 'other' section. ;)

I just thought; wasn't F355 on Naomi ?

Couldn't see that link :? Hey, I knew you were good on terra firma, you're not too bad off it :) How does that game compare to the Dreamcast game Episode 1 racer ?
I don't think they are the same ?

Oh definitely !

@cloofoofoo, thanks for posting that pic\info - very interesting !

Yes, Ferarri F355 1 & 2 were NAOMI but I didn't mention them as they've already been converted. F355 2 is more or less a 'reverse conversion' of the Dreamcast game.

Star Wars Racer Arcade differs greatly from the home console version. It was developed by Sega Rosso as opposed to Lucasart and played like a simplified version of Sega Rally. What really made the game stand out were the pod controls; two levers to control both speed and steering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuIQIHlQumU

Guilty Gear XX is Naomi right? I really enjoyed the first one and would love to play the sequel, just not on an inferior system like the PS2. Is Naomi exactly the same as DC?

BrianC: GG series runs on Sammys Atomiswave which is essentialy NAOMI tech. NAOMI is essential an upgraded DC.

rjay63: The DC version is just a port of the N64 version, which is a shame. I dig the Sega arcade game.

Does that mean some of the Naomi ports to the DC aren't 100% accurate? I'm not very familiar with Naomi and I've always heard that it was the same as DC until a bit of research today suggested otherwise

BTW, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilty_Gear_XX says it is Naomi but it could be wrong so let me know! It would be amazing if someone was working on a DC port for it back in the day :D

Yes! it varies from game to game, for the most part, the difference comes down to loading (NAOMI does not load, when the game is booted to memory is the only time) and slight un-noticable texture loss. The difference is really negligable. Although the flip side of the argument is that DC ports add addtional content not even present in the arcade version and in some cases improves the arcade counterpart (Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Naomi has alot more slowdown when too much is on screen while in the console port, capcom cleaned a majority of the slowdown overall. The same for Powerstone 2!)

Atomiswave is just an offshoot to Segas NAOMI hardware (even the SEGA logo pops up when an Atomiswave is turned on!)

Very cool :D I wonder if it is easy to port from Naomi or Atomiswave to the DC? I'm always looking for new homebrew but all we seem to get is BoR games :)
