Actually, the Playstation 3 has double that (8 cores). The 360 has 3. I'm not sure about the Wii but I'd guess it's only 2.

it has 1 power processing unit & 8 process elements of which one is for the OS & 1 spare.

thats not the same as 8 cores running in sequence, in fact its prolly more like the Saturn than Sony would want it to be

Yeah I know but for the less technically savvy I figured it would be easier to say 8 cores. You're probably right when comparing it to the Saturn. The PS3 has been said to be the most difficult to program for this generation.

Well I was never a fan of Sony, Never paid any attention to their products, But 8 Cores is a lot. That means they really don't need a Next Generation of consoles cause im pretty sure they haven't used the full potential of specifications.

But back to OUYA, Quad Core console, 1GB ram Still a lot of potential for some great games. As long as we get some developers willing to make console grade games, and not KINECT/ Motion sensor gaming personally i like traditional gaming with buttons and sitting.

The PS3 uses single-core PPE and then 8 SPE's with one disabled to improve yields when manufacturing and another SPE reserved for the OS. So the amount of accessible ones is 1 PPE and 6 SPEs.

Also keep in mind processors from different generations are going to performance differently and more cores isn't always better. For example a new gen dual-core CPU could easily outperform a quad-core from a previous generation.

Actually consoles have met their full potential. PC games keep getting better and better, while consoles have leveled off. Tech hardware advances so fast, I am suprised they have been able to keep up for so long. These days you need some serious hardware to play games at high resolution.

A good example of how consoles have fallen behind is the fact that most games are actually upscaled, because Xbox/PS3 do not have enough power to run the games in a native 1080P resolution. Examples:

PS3 CoD titles and their native resolutions:
Call of Duty: Black Ops = 960x544 (2xAA) 544P
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare = 1024x600 (2xAA) 600P
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 = 1024x600 (2xAA) 600P
Xbox 360 CoD titles and their native resolutions:
Call of Duty: Black Ops = 1040x608 (2xAA) 608P
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare = 1024x600 (2xAA) 600P
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 = 1024x600 (2xAA) 600P

So your getting a 600P picture upscaled to 720P/1080P. The image quality suffers greatly versus displaying the image in 1080P native. Also the current generation is based on DirectX 9, so you miss all the new features from DirectX 10 & 11.

New consoles are overdue, games have surpassed the current generation. Luckily the rumored specs for the Xbox 720/PS4 indicate that they will have no problem running in 1080P native resolution with DX11. Wii U is a disappointment hardware wise, it is rumored to be barely faster than Xbox/PS3.

This past summer, the gaming world was buzzing with talk of Ouya, the $99 gaming console that runs on Google's Android operating system. What started off as a Kickstarter appeal blossomed into a movement, with over $8.5 million in donations from gamers around the world. Over the holidays, the system starting shipping to developers and Ouya revealed that it planned to ship over a thousand units to developers all around the world. Now we have an update on a release for the consumer version of the system.

The news was first confirmed to the Wall Street Journal by CEO Julie Uhrman. Uhrman told the Journal that the console would go on sale for $99 in June of this year, adding that Amazon, GameStop, Target, and Best Buy would be stocking the device. During her interview, Uhrman said pre-orders for Ouya would kick off today, February 5. Sure enough, at time of writing, the console was already listed on Amazon.

Pricing is set at $99, with extra controllers ringing in at $49.99. Your initial $99 purchase will net you the Ouya and one controller, so it's likely you'll want to add a second one to your cart from the get go. The $99 package contains one Ouya game console, one wireless controller with removable faceplates, an HDMI cable, two AA batteries, and a power adapter.

Ouya has certainly come a long way since it launched on Kickstarter last summer. The project is a perfect example of the Kickstarter model, which involves individuals backing projects they want to see come to fruition.

Ouya boasts Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor clocked to 1GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal flash storage (expandable via USB), MicroUSB x 1, USB 2.0 x 1, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and HDMI out.

Ouya to impose free-to-try policy on all compatible apps
Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman confirmed that free-to-try periods - essentially demos - will ensure quality control among developers keen to push their games through the Android-based platform.
"It cleans up the app store," she said. "It removes the confusion between a paid app store and a free app store. We also think it cuts down on the copycat games, where you have games that look like each other and one is paid but the other is free and you don't know what to do."

Elsewhere, Ouya intends to keep policing to a minimum, but will monitor for copyright infringement, malware and pornography.

Uhrman revealed last week that Ouya will release on a yearly, iterative basis similar to smartphones. It's expected to launch in June for USD $100.

It's cool modern console . But I prefer Dreamcast.
