It's comparing your current time to the previous best. And since it beats the previous best, the current time is highlighted in red font. If it didn't beat the previous best, it would be white (like my 1st 2 screenshots). Play through it again (w/Claire) and this current time will then be your best.

Anyway, that's kind of what I figured. Just kind of misleading, especially considering that pretty much every other game I know just replaces the high score with the last score, if need be.
