480p is low when compared to the native resolution of bigger/recent screens, so I'd say that it's more than normal if depending on the game, it looks grainy/blocky/pixelated.

Yeah, your probably right. I can't believe I don't remember seeing it before. I don't know how I couldn't have noticed it. I used to play my Dreamcast on a 56 inch Samsung DLP and I don't ever recall seeing those grainy spots in the picture.
Maybe everything looked that way back then and my mind just accepted it as normal, then years later when everything looks so much better and resolutions are so much higher that it now sticks out so much. Nostalgia is playing tricks on my mind!!

Either that or the picture you took doesn't show the problem very well... lol

I agree, it may be the picture you took. My vga image quality is similar - I have a retrobit adapter.
Edit: added manufacturer.

Alrighty...So I took a few pictures n try to get a close shot of what I'm talking about and hopefully I'll know for good if I am just crazy, and this is how it's gonna look, or if maybe my VGA box is having signal issues.
To me the grainy picture almost looks like video interference or something, but maybe that's just how the DC looks and Nostalgia is playing a factor here.

In this pic it's really noticable at the top of the screen

In this one I really notice it on the road, and on the white and red arrows on the right side of the screen

Hopefully those pics really show off what I'm talking about.
So...am I just crazy? Or is my VGA box having a problem?

I'm not sure if I just want to see things, or if there's something there... lol
I do notice some kind of fishbone pattern though. Is that it?...

Yes!!!! That's EXACTLY WHAT IT IS!!!! Ok, So I know I'm not crazy!!! lol
See at first I was thinking to myself "ok...polygons back in the PSX days we're kinda grainy, maybe they we're in the DC days too but my Sega fan boy goggles shielded my eyes from such things!! lol
But the more I thought about it, I don't recall ever seeing that when I used my dreamcast on my old vga box on an old CRT PC monitor and I don't recall seeing that at all.
Also, it's there from the moment the DC turns on, even if there is a completely blank screen, that odd pattern stays on the screen.

Hi, I just registered for this topic.
I have the same issue and the same box. Have you found out if this is normal or not?

Yeah, the VGA box is crappy quality. I picked up a VGA box made by Madness Gameware which is the kind I had years ago and it works much better. There is just a hint of that grainyness, but I'm thinking blowing up that 480p image to 1080p on a 55inch LED has more to do with that than anything. I wish I had an old CRT PC monitor laying around, I'd try it on that also. I'm on the hunt for a nice 25inch CRT PC monitor, hoping to use that to play my DC games on if it provides the best picture.
A buddy of mine found a bunch he had and is selling them for only $30 and the money goes to a cool chairity called Childs Play to boot! Here is a link to it.
