I'm gonna bump this one instead of opening a new thread, anyway: will this work with the saves I got from the original, japanese speech, version?

Yes, but please don't download this version, get the version smith the Bleem king made with FULL English speech all swapped from the Xbox and converted.
Now no more silent folks in the streets! Everybody speaks now!

There are 2 versions he made, one for regular 700mb 80min Cdr's, and a better version that has the highest quality speech files possible, but you have to buy special 850mb 99min Cdr's.

Either way sound is crappy, this game is better played in its original GDROM, period.

Well, I love hearing it in English and I played the whole game for the first time (thanx to Smith). I hate the text thing like on the GD-ROM. The style of game play is that you do not need the timing response like you would in Q3, UT, Call of Duty, etc...
This means it plays well unless your DC is struggling with burned games.

So the differences between the two versions (the 99 min cd and the standard cd) is only in the quality of the sound?
Can you hear everyone you talk with, like in the xbox version, or is it the same as the japanese version?

Yeah I almost pulled the trigger on the 99min CD-R's just to get the better quality version of Shenmue II, only problem is I only found one site that's selling them and they have these annoying banana print logo's on them. If only they sold Lightscribe 850mb 99min CD-R's.. if there are any other brands out there please feel free to let me know thanks ^^'

Alright I just finished the first cd of the english version, it's actually really good.
The quality of the voices is very low but at least now I can understand what people tell Ryo, in the japanese version there are times where the subtitles only show for a split second.
I don't care that the voice acting is bad, I actually think that most of the voices are better than in shenmue 1.

Yup. All voices are there, nothing has been left out, but the reason it is such low voice quality on the first one is cause it had to be, or we wouldn't have any way for 99% of people to play this on their system with all speech.
I will eventualy get some 99min cdr's for the perfect speech version, but until then the first one suits my needs just fine.

With the SD cards, you could get a complete dump of your GDROM and play it withno quality loss though...
